I have been reading rumour of magsafe charger for the next iPad Pro?

What's the point as the iPad unlike a 2012 laptop eith 2 hours battery life doesn't spend 90% of its life tethered to a charger on a desk.

Furthermore one of the big advantages of an iPad over a laptop is that it uses the same charger as an iPhone.

This makes traveling light easy and if you forgot your charger, there is usually an lighting or USB c cable wherever you are going.

So long as it's at 100% when I wake up in the morning, it doesn't really matter how long it takes.
Exactly. Same with a phone, it should last you all day and then put it on a charger at night.
I welcome magsafe and it’s future accessories. An iPad stand with magsafe would allow the iPad to be rotated to any position while also charging wirelessly. As someone who uses Apple devices naked it would allow me to use it as a second display (universal control) without a case or keyboard case then when I want to take it to the couch it just pop it off. I like convenience features and there’s been many times I don’t want to fiddle with removing a case as it just adds to the bulk which I dislike at home.

I think the confusion also is - which version of magsafe are we talking about, and which will we ultimately get? The iPhone magsafe, or the MacBook version?

In a sense, the iPhone version already exists in the form of the magic keyboard with its added charging port, though I am less likely to reach for my iPad in the middle of the night compared to my iPhone (where I may grab it to check the time or snooze the alarm).

Though if it's the laptop version, are we basically getting a 2nd charging port in addition to the usb-c port (which I doubt will be going away anytime soon)? Where will it be?

I won't say no to it, but I don't really see the point either.

I would rather a second usbc/tb port than that - by a long chalk.

Do you mean the brick or the cable?

If the cable, this is only true for the regular/base iPad now. The mini, the Air, and the Pro all use USB-C.

And if the brick, any of them can use any of the bricks.

Might as well just improve the Smart Connector. MagSafe's magnets won't be enough to hold the weight of the iPad, so you already need a big magnetic stand to cover a huge area of the back.

I think it might be nice in an iPad mini model. I don't see it being useful for a 12.9" iPad Pro though unless they add a Mac-style MagSafe port either on the Magic Keyboard or the iPad itself.

MagSafe on the iPhone is in addition to, not instead of, Lightning.

MagSafe on the M2 MacBook Air is in addition to, not instead of, the two USB-C ports.

MagSafe is not a data port so it is 100% guaranteed that any magnetic charging port on the iPad will be in addition to the USB-C.

I hope it’s MagSafe 3 from Mac, NOT MagSafe from iPhone.

Even more so, I hope this means much more macOS functionality is coming in the next couple of iPadOS releases as well.

You kinda already get that if you use a Magic Keyboard and plug the AC into the keyboard and charge though the smart connector.

I think those things are unrelated because adding USB-C didn't bring more MacOS functionality.
Truth.

This is my hope:

MagSafe 3 *could* imply more all day, serious desk usage. And more significant power output and battery draw.

I'm over here holding out for M1 (or M2) Pro (it does have "Pro" in the name).

If MagSafe 3 is where the USB-C/TB port has been, then maybe a TB3 or 4 port on each side of the MagSafe port.

And if they do this, then that could mean things like Fiinal Cut Pro, Logic, etc...

Maybe the winds blowing that direction? Maybe at least a slight breeze? Maybe at least a ceiling fan on Low?

MagSafe would be a fundamental change because it will also have to have a port, and that starts putting us in new territory from anything that an iPad has been before.

We'll see.....

I agree. Honestly, my ideal iPad line would look like this:

iPad - 10.5" display with squared-off edges for Apple Pencil 2 support and magic keyboard. Chassy of current iPad Air with the display from 2019 iPad Air 3. A series chipsets

iPad Mini - Current design, update internals regularly and eventually shrink the bezels. A-series chips, basically a shrunken iPad with a more edge-to-edge display due to the relative size of the device. Maybe make this the same price as the base iPad.

iPad Air - Basically take over the specs of the current 11" Pro, M1 (m2, m3 etc) with promotion, face id, better speakers etc.

iPad Pro - M2 Pro, M3 Pro etc. With Mini-LED or OLED displays, better thermals, more like a laptop replacement. Have 12" and 14" sizes.

I think that would clearly put the Pro in a class of its own but for people that don't need those updates, iPad Air is a great choice.

Would be nice to have MagSafe for charging with TB4 port for data transfer/charging other devices, external monitor support. I think one of the best features of the Magic Keyboard is the USB-C port for charging which leaves the TB4 port on the iPad Pro open.

Due to thermal throttling, you would never get M2-Pro performance in an iPad. The M2 already has M1-Pro/Max's video acceleration built in so you might as well just get the M2 and save that $200.

I know you wouldn't, it's more of an idealized iPad line tbh.

I think a lot of iPad users actually need a Mac, but they’re too fond of the idea that a tablet can do everything a computer does..

One can hope but I’m not gonna get my hopes up that iPad becomes more like a Mac based on a hardware charging port.

That may be the case, but if one computer platform (iPad) doesn’t cut it for the user and they use it professionally (for work) wouldn’t they just switch to a computer platform that works for them?

MagSafe wouldn’t mean anything as far as software changes. There’s already the Magic Keyboard with Smart Connector for all day desk usage, leaving the USB-C/TB port available.

The addition of Virtual Memory Swap and Stage Manager on iOS 16 probably gets the iPad one step closer to getting MacOS apps rather than the addition of MagSafe.
