I think a lot of iPad users actually need a Mac, but they’re too fond of the idea that a tablet can do everything a computer does..

I gave up on that idea after trying Windows convertibles (Lenovo, Surface).

Desktops/laptops for work and iPads for leisure (and a bit of work) is a better setup for my needs.

For me reverse wireless charging would be a huge gain in the new iPP. You could leave the house for the day with no charger or maximum one for all your devices.

Problem is MagSafe doesn’t make a lot of sense in an iPad in a lot of scenarios - if you want to charge your iPhone with it you don’t want it screen down on a table, and a glass back sounds pretty silly for an iPad. If we get MacBook MagSafe that seems very non-Apple to simply add ports and would not be an elegant implementation as you’ve still got a cable sticking out the side.

I hope we see a new Magic Keyboard that uses the new 4-pin connector to enable the case to become a MagSafe charger, both to charge the iPad while being used, freeing up the Thunderbolt Port and also to charge your other devices via reverse wireless charging when needed. Makes for a more elegant solution but obviously means you need the MK case to gain the feature which suits Apple’s desire to convince people to upgrade their kit!

I travel a fair bit so I am viewing this from a charging perspective - not an engineering advantage i.e. ability to landscape on a MK. For me the IPP does not need MagSafe - the iPhone needs USB C.

My MBA, IPP and Beats Fit Pro all have USB C charging, so I can carry any combination of those and then a USB C power adapter (with the country specific pins from the travel pack) and cable. Brilliant.. nice and light.. minimum cables. And then the iPhone... USB C to lightning cable just for that.

Even with MagSafe you have to carry cables, even reverse charging (if you are traveling for more than a day) you need a MagSafe cable and power adapter... just make it all USB C.

To me it seems utterly utterly utterly pointless to have a MagSafe charging patch on the back of a glass backed iPad! It only makes sense if they use the pogo connectors with some kind of MagSafe connector like on MacBooks. And even then I don’t see the point of it? Maybe they’ll bump the prices and use this as part of an excuse to? Plugging in USB to charge it seems easy enough to me.

I have been reading rumour of magsafe charger for the next iPad Pro?

What's the point as the iPad unlike a 2012 laptop eith 2 hours battery life doesn't spend 90% of its life tethered to a charger on a desk.

Furthermore one of the big advantages of an iPad over a laptop is that it uses the same charger as an iPhone.

This makes traveling light easy and if you forgot your charger, there is usually an lighting or USB c cable wherever you are going.
I’m one of those weirdos that uses his iPad to video record long music sets. The internal battery won’t last 3+ hours of 4K (at least on my current 10.5). MagSafe would be nice so it’ll open the thunderbolt/usb C port for the mic and/or interface I use without the need of the obnoxiously large dongle. The MagSafe would draw power from an attached battery pack. All very compact (as far as iPads go).

I really like this idea. It would also be cool if the new smart connector/MagSafe/whatever it is supported data transfer via the Magic Keyboard USB-C port, so that you can plug in monitors and other peripherals without the cable sticking out of the middle of the iPad.

It would be cool. However if they don't end up doing this, it could be worth getting an 11" Pro with the Magic Keyboard for what you use an iPad for. The charging port on the magic keyboard frees up the thunderbolt port to be used for interfaces etc.

I use the iPad for EVERYTHING. I’m all in on iOS. I was actually gifted an 11“ iPad M1 but gave it back because I just want the glorious 12.9” screen. Also. I use the iPad as the video camera so this attached keyboard thing etc is more unnecessary bulk. But it’s an idea nonetheless. I’ll think about it
