For the record, the iPhone/Yahoo!'s implementation of PUSH use P-IMAP, not IDLE.

For those of you who are trying to just setup PUSH, not address the original issue of the post, have you all heeded that wise-sounding advice of post #9?

As for setting up push, all you need to do is put IMAP.apple.mail.yahoo.com into your advanced setting on your phone.

just to add on to this, not only is yahoo p-imap, but it seems unlikely that iphone's mail client will support IDLE.

http://dmiessler.com/study/imap_idle/

In other words, IDLE's push functionality only works when an existing, healthy connection already exists between the client and server. Anything that disrupts that connection kills the ability for the server to send messages down to the client. And only the client can re-initiate the connection once it has broken.

though to be fair, chattermail for the palm works perfectly with IDLE... it's all way above my head and really i'm not sure that i need immediate email.

anyone have a media temple account? i contacted them about implementing push imap; they said if enough interest warranted it they'd do it.

My dad has a yahoo small-biz account which appears to be just pop so is it possible for me to add that imap prefix? I forward all my gmail to yahoo and use gmail as outgoing smtp.

In addition, a lot of my e-mails sent from the iPhone never arrive even though the phone says it is sending them.

I'm having the same issue. I can receive push e-mails sent to my Yahoo account just fine, but no e-mails sent from the iPhone using my Yahoo account ever actually arrive at their destination even though the phone indicates it is sending them. However, I can send e-mails from my iPhone using my POP3 account (not Yahoo) though and they make it thru just fine.

It's hit or miss with the whole Yahoo push e-mails with me. Some makes it ok and some don't. I do however have the same problem you have with not being able to send email out. It shows that I have but it never makes it anywhere. I sent one a few days ago to my sister and today she told me she got nothing. I tested this myself a few times today, I used my gmail and hotmail accounts sending email to my iPhone and from the iPhone to the 2 accounts, nothing.

Details are here:
http://www.everyone.net/business-email/mobile-email.html

and

http://www.everyone.net/email-technology/email-product-features.html#imap

"TRUE IMAP "PUSH" EMAIL* FOR MOBILE DEVICES

Everyone.net's email solution supports push email allowing your mobile users to stay up-to-date, and fully sync their mail on the road. Email, folders and contacts that are always synchronized – access your data from most any Web browser, computer or compatible mobile device.

* Requires the use of third party IMAP IDLE client"

iPrincess,

would appreciate more info / experiences with everyone.net

is it really doing push, or not, perhaps via IDLE, I am not sure if iPhone mail app on the iPhone is IDLE supported, I'll bet it is.

HUH!?

Push-IMAP is sometimes incorrectly viewed as an alternative to the IMAP IDLE command (RFC 2177), but it's not as IDLE is one of the required mechanisms for a P-IMAP server to notify the client (optional notifications are SMS or WAP Push).

This is IDLE (RFC 2177):
http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2177

Push IMAP is based on IMAPv4 Rev1 (RFC 3501), but contains additional enhancements for optimization in a mobile setting. It was developed by Oracle and other partners, and submitted as input to Lemonade Profile IETF Working Group.

http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3501

also see:
http://www.lemonadeformobiles.com/

and
http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/lemonade-charter.html

And since Push-IMAP started w/Oracle, and the Jobs/Ellison connection, it's not surprising that Apple is touting P-IMAP? Sounds plausible at least...

Push-IMAP is largely proprietary, and not part of any IETF RFC or working group, AFAIK.

Corrected the folder issue

I deleted the IMAP path prefix and all the folders are back and no more sending or receving issues.

I have an everyone.net email account and the "push" is not working at all. I used to have a Treo650 with Chattermail (using everyone.net imap) and I was getting my emails as soon as someone sent them to me. With the iPhone (using everyone.net imap) I only get emails every 15 minutes (due to Apple's minimum time to check them). I emailed everyone.net about this and waiting for a response. By the way, I have no problems with "push" emails sent to me with yahoo.com. The only problem with yahoo is that i have to log-in everyday and send a mail and type in some security number and letter combination in order to get my yahoo emails to work. I Apple, Yahoo or both owe us an explanation as to why we were not given the 'push' email were were promised. Just my .02

This thread came to an abrupt stop several weeks ago and I was wondering if anything new has come up or if anyone has additional/new experiences, in particular with everyone.net for push email. There have been conflicting experiences out there and one poster stated that push worked with their personal email service. If so, I was wondering how that can be implemented. It seems that I have to get my own domain name for this to work. Does it matter who I have for my ISP? Can I set up a separate email address with my current ISP and not include all the mail from my other personal email account? I have been reading so many posts on how Yahoo push email service is so unreliable and that has been my experience as well. I would appreciate any comments. Thanks.
