As an iPad 9 user, I shall say it is a great machine, for my purposes.
The only regret I have nowadays is the fact I haven't purchase a cellular model.
I had to readjust my expectations about tablets: they cannot replace laptops, they cannot replace paper+pencil. They are a solution to accommodate those other platforms.

They have different feature sets.

Ultimately it depends on how much you want to spend. That's why Apple has iPads are so many different price points. For people who want to spend more, there are more expensive iPads.

Generally speaking, the cheaper tablets provide more value for money simply because they are cheaper, and they do the same thing as the expensive models. E.g software experience is the same, but other features are different, e.g. laminated display, no of speakers, refresh rate, Apple Pencil support.
Interesting thought regarding software experience being the same. Would we think the lower amount of RAM on the base iPads (especially the 3GB on the 9th gen) would in relatively short order make for a different software experience, where some software won't even run on the device- or some apps keep crashing due to the inability to work within a 3GB RAM limitation?
Or should- at least for a few years to come- apps work just fine for the most part even on the basic ones, and that 8GB RAM spec on the Air and Pro models is really only for those who do heavy multitasking, heavy gaming, or run one of just a couple of true Pro apps?

I got the Pro (12.9) mainly for watching movies/sports so I wanted the large screen and better audio, but really that's the only reason I went with the Pro over the regular. I do find I use it more often for general stuff I'd use my MBP for in the past, so that is nice. And I still have the MBP for when I need it.

The main reason I went with the Pro over a model like the Air was to get a deal from Best Buy/Verizon. The non-cellular models have no GPS, which hindered my use of the iPad for work. With the trade in of some older devices, I got the Pro for what amounts to $14/mo (roughly $500) added to my wireless bill.

I know you are looking at the 11", but with the 12.9" I think the Apple Magic Keyboard is almost a must because of the size. The 11 Pro I think you'd be fine with a normal (cheap) case.

Thanks for the feedback!
Yeah, I was looking at the 12.9" in the store- and the display is just stunning, but I was thinking it would be too big to really manage without having the magic keyboard- something I was not planning to buy.

Great deal you got on yours, though!
