My prediction about the command change for beta 2 came true. It is now

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Big\ Sur\ Beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled

After Beta 2 released, I download the installer from appstore and its named "Install MacOS Beta.App". Is this Beta 1 installer?

Then I used terminal to create usb boot. Terminal showed that USB created sucessfull. But I was unable to boot from this USB. The system not see it as bootable device.

What should I do now?

I download the installer from appstore

How did you download it from the appstore?

It is not available from the appstore yet.

Install MacOS Beta.App is beta 1 requiring the command

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled

Install MacOS Big Sur Beta.App is beta 2 requiring the command

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Big\ Sur\ Beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled

You can download it by using Beta Profile. When you using update mechanism of system, they will download the whole beta.app and put it in Application folder. You can use that .APP file to create bootable USB

Btw, I solve my problem. From Mojave, Apple hide the root device, only show the volume. Hence, we format, we only format the volume, not the Partition. But to make a bootable USB, we need a usb that format in GUID map.

Then Format the root USB device to GUID Partition Map and use terminal to make bootable usb again.

Why are you guys doing clean install from USB drive when you could do this from Recovery after you done update Catalina > BS ?

This guys is right I completely forgot about this lol!!!! Also I made 128GB c drive and 2TB d drive one for OS and one for data? Do you suggest I keep it this way.

or you think I should make a hybrid drive again back to OEM spec? Big Sur is working great my problem is I cannit open edge browser? It tried to open the icon jumps up and down and than just closes?? Any idea how to fix this ? Don’t really want to reinstall the os! It works in a new profile just not under mine and it’s pissing me off lol

I don’t have the Install file anymore I removed the 9GB install file! So if I now want to format and rebuild my fish ion drive how do I reinstall and do a clean install of Big Sur?? Or so I have to install Catalina first and upgrade to Big Sur again?? Can anyone maybe make an iso image of their bootable usb or something??

How do you download the "Install macOS Big Sur.app" without upgrading to it? I want to install to a different disk for testing without risking my Catalina install.

[Edit] Turns out clicking update in system preferences actually downloads the installer rather than updating your mac immediately

Google it but you download the profile and go to update it when the installer is asking you to upgrade click cancel and it will be on your MacOS typically under your apps or on your desktop possible.

but if you google you will get the instruction

I'm trying to use the Install Disk Creator app to make a bootable USB Installer of Beta 3, and I'm getting an error saying it is lacking the file "Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg". Looks like I've got the full 12+GB "Install macOS Big Sur Beta.app", too. When I show package contents, I don't see the InstallESD.dmg in that file path, either. Any ideas? I'm wanting to install on a separate drive.

You could use Terminal instead as per the first post in this thread (with usb named Untitled):

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Big\ Sur\ Beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled

I made a bootable usb for beta 3 this way and it worked.

Now that the installer name has removed "beta" for Release Candidate 2, this is the command now. It will be the same for public release:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Big\ Sur.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled

I’m still unable to locate the full installer.
