I just used DiskMaker X 4b4 to create the bootable USB drive.

Change the name of the install file to "Install OS X Yosemite" and you should be good to go.

You don't have to change the name. I left it as downloaded and it worked just fine. However it doesn't hurt to rename the final result so as not to get confused of its contents.

I'm getting the following error:

"OS X could not be installed on your computer

No packages were eligible for install. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance"

Has anyone else received an error like this?

Still having problems trying to create a bootable USB drive using Terminal.

Here's my setup:
Late 2012 Mac Mini
OS Yosemite
I have placed "Install OS X 10.11 Developer Beta" into the Applications folder
I have an 8gb USB flashdrive named "Untitled" ready and waiting as the target

I then open Terminal and enter:
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ 10.11\ Developer\ Beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ 10.11\ Developer\ Beta.app --nointeraction

... and enter my password when prompted.

Terminal throws this up:
sudo: /Applications/Install OS X 10.11 Developer Beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia: command not found

More information that may be pertinent:
I right-click on the Install OS X 10.11 Developer Beta and choose "show package contents"
I navigate to:
Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia

I click on createinstallmedia and hit "Get Info" and get this result:
Kind: TextEdit Document
41,360 bytes

Is the above information correct?
I'm thinking that something is wrong with "createinstallmedia" in my copy of the installer?
And that's why Terminal can't work with it?

Is your goal that you must create the USB installer using only terminal commands, or is your goal to get to the end product USB installer by any method?

Any method that works. I don't care.

I've already tried "DiskMaker X" -- couldn't get that to work, either.

Can you suggest "a third way" ??

Not sure why DiskMaker X didn't work. I've tried several times and it never fails. I have the latest version, running it from 10.10.3.

Do you download the file directly from Apple? You must have the actual .app file.
Also, I'm using an 8GB HP USB stick.

The level of difficulty you are having leads me to think you have a bad download or a problem with the USB stick.

I don't think it's a problem with the USB flashdrive -- it's fine.

I -might- have a problem with the download.
And no, it wasn't directly from Apple (I'm not a registered developer, though I am in the registered public beta program).

That's why I was wondering about the file
"createinstallmedia"
... that I mentioned above in post 28.

It shows in the finder as being a "TextEdit document".
Does it show the same in the download that others are using?

Yeah, I suspect this is the source of your issue. However I do have some perfectly fine USB sticks that don't work well for this purpose. I don't really know why that is, but it does happen. I gave them to my wife/kids for school use.

In case anyone is interested, here is how to make a bootable USB drive out of the beta download.

0. This assumes you downloaded 10.11 beta from the App Store. It puts the installed inside you main applications folder. If you got it from some other source you may have differs results.

1. Format a USB drive. It must be at least 8gb. You can format it in disk utility. I did it in the new partition tab, HFS+ Journaled. Also, under options make sure it is set as guid. For simplicity I set the drive name to beta.

2. Run this command in terminal:

Code:
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ 10.11\ Developer\ Beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/beta --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ 10.11\ Developer\ Beta.app --nointeraction

3. Put in your password. If you did it right, it should pop up this:

Erasing Disk: 0%... 10%... 20%... 30%...100%...
Copying installer files to disk...

4. Be patient. This WILL take a while. When the process is done, the terminal window will return to the prompt.

5. After this you can boot from the USB drive.
I got this error and ideas

Erasing Disk: 0%... 10%... 20%... 30%...100%...

Copying installer files to disk...

The copy of the installer app failed

?

and I am a developer I got the Beta from Apple so it is all genuine

rock6079 - I am experiencing this same error. I know this is an old post, but I was wondering if you ever figured out a fix for this. Thanks.

I know these posts are a bit old, but just in case anyone with the same problem runs across this thread I was able to solve it and get the install to work by first entering Terminal and resetting the system clock to the correct date and time.

Instructions for resetting the clock are here: https://bensmann.no/changing-system-date-from-terminal-os-x-recovery/

And another discussion of the issue is here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/29009610#29009610
