Is it possible, in fb or insta, to upload new profile logo or cover pics but without going public instantly? I want to have a look first on how they look when placed, i might want to make them smaller or larger etc.

I don't think so. I use dummy accounts to test these things myself.

The best we can do is to activate all privacy options. And not send out any messages with the accounts. Basically an inert account. No-one will know how to find it, and even IF it will take a long time to do so. Use a dummy email account as well to create the dummy social accounts.
