Don't know if this will help clarify a basic BT car set up for those of us who do not have a manufacturer's integrated system.

My Parrot unit is a few years old but seems to function okay with the Parked Car bit. Location is UK.

Car set up:
BMW 1-Series (seven years old) with standard-fitted factory stereo/CD player.
Parrot MKi9000 (now discontinued) with UNIKA box attached to car stereo and steering wheel controls.
Brodit iPhone 6s holder.

Brodit holder is connected via mini USB and standard USB lead that goes to Parrot unit, which is plugged into car stereo. Was told by fitter that USB connection only powers the phone, and all other 'stuff' is done through BT.

iPhone Settings
Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Maps > While Using the App
Settings > Privacy > Locations Services > System Services > Frequent Locations
Settings > Notifications > Maps > Allow Notifications
Settings > Maps > Show Parked Location
Main Screen swipe left to right > Widgets > Edit > enable Maps Destinations

As mentioned earlier, my car shows up in Maps near home (30 yards away), and if I park somewhere else. The Widget shows where I have come from and gives live updates of traffic for when I choose to drive back.

To be honest though, the Widget retains information from places I've visited in Maps and then clears it when it feels like it, so it doesn't make sense to my little head at this time. But at least I know where my car is parked!

Failing any of the above working, when I ask Siri to "Mark this location as parked car", it shows up in Maps with the car symbol.
