Glossy is great for the average user who just wants to surf the web and watch videos. But if you're a serious user who is going to be doing video production, graphic design, photography, print production, etc. you should be getting matte because it delivers more accurate color. Glossy oversaturates darks and lights which distorts your perception of the image on screen.

Agreed 100%.

I'm going to purchase a new MBP soon as well, it will be mostly used for school (graphics, photos etc)

Now my question is, if you pick a glossy one, the pictures can still be calibrated right on an external CRT right?
Wouldnt that pretty much solve that problem if I really prefer glossy for movies etc?

Greetz

ps. 1st post ;)

Thank you posters, and I know this question has been posted a lot but I needed answers for specific things. It looks i should be going matte over glossy, thanks for the help!

Awesome answer. I was wondeing the very same thing and this is about the best answer I've seen.

the way I figure it is if Apple Cinima Displays come in matte only, then there's prolly a good reason to go with it.

I do graphic design and a bit of simple video editing. I ordered matte 17" high-res for reasons several have stated. But now, matte 17" hi-res seems to have a 4 week delay! Has anyone else seen long delays on the 17" hi-res matte?

Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte Matte

I think the votes are in and counted now.

:D

I tried to go o my local Apple store for one, he said they've been selling more of them then they expected, so now I have one on backorder with Apple. Sucks. :(

I've been back and forth on this myself. Plan to buy a MPB in October
when Leopard released.

I want the glossy, but think I should get the matte. Hmmmmm.

I was in the exact same situation. I went to the Apple store about 400 times to compare the screens. The only problem is that the lighting in the stores are not very good for comparing, because it is recessed. I finally remebered how I always hate when I can see a window reflected on my tv screen (yes I'm anal) so I went with the matte.

The glossy looks cool, but I would hate even the slightest glare on my screen. I'm also in school, and would hate it if I could see the reflection of the people sitting behind me even the slightest.

With that being said, I have heard that for photo editing etc, the matte is the way to go, because it shows the pictures more accurately.

But as many people have said, it is a personal thing, so go with that. But know that comparison in the stores won't do you any good. If you have a friend who has a glossy screen, ask to burrow it to see if you like it.

Also consider that if you'll be using it in a room with fluorescent lighting, it will reflect off the glossy screen a lot. I use a Dell laptop at work with a glossy screen, and the glare is so bad it gives me eyestrain and headaches. It originally had a matte screen and Dell switched it on a warranty repair to glossy. Now I'm fighting with them to set it back to matte (my head nearly explodes every time I deal with the ineptitude that is Dell).
