***ing GLOSSY all the way! Dont listen to these matte *******s.

Glossy does not reflect much at all except outdoors. Who the hell uses thier laptop in direct sunlight anyway?

GLOSSY looks phenomenal...period.

I thought the whole idea of a laptop was portability, thus the ability for it to be used everywhere, even outside.

Like I said, I have all kinds of reflections in mine when it's sitting on my desk (yes, it's indoors).

I'll hopefully be happy with the matte screen I'm getting on the replacement, at least in terms of reflections.

matte because its possible to be bright in the rooms, plus you might use it outside, plus matte is just better in general.

http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2007SPIE.6492E..16B:
Recently flat panel computer displays and notebook computer are designed with a so called glare panel i.e. highly glossy screens, have emerged on the market. The shiny look of the display appeals to the costumers, also there are arguments that the contrast, colour saturation etc improves by using a glare panel. /.../ A study of the effect of highly glossy screens compared to matt screens has been performed. The results show a slight advantage for the glossy screen when no disturbing reflexes are present, however the difference was not statistically significant. When disturbing reflexes are present the advantage is changed into a larger disadvantage and this difference is statistically significant. /.../

Ergonomics: For prolonged viewing, ergonomic experts suggest that LCDs with a traditional antiglare finish are easier on the eyes than high-gloss displays

Any thoughts on this?

IT'S ALL PERSONAL PREFERENCE. Be glad you have a choice. Check them out in a store. Pick one based on your needs and be happy with it. ;)

I am getting a MBP later this month for college. I am going to get the 17'' with the HD screen. I will be using it to watch alot of TV and movies, and I will also use Aperture to do alot of photo editing. I wont be printing most of these pictures so if the pictures are not 100% true to print then it is not a big deal. So my question is will the benefits of the better looking pictures video on my computer justify getting a glossy screen instead of a matte screen, or would I still be better off getting a matte screen?

Definitely Glossy. Much better for TV and Movies. And the glar is nothing like othe rglossy screens I have seen. I guess they are all the same but I compared the MBP glossy screen to an HP notebook glassy screen and there was no glare on the MBP but a fair bit amount on the HP.

Go Glossy!

I'm replacing my glossy MBP with a matte MBP because of all the reflections I get in the screen when I'm just sitting at my desk. (Well, the actual replacing is due to my yellow bottom screen, but I asked them to change it to matte.) It reflects like crazy, very annoying.
Funny i love the glossy but made a drive to the apple store and they upgraded me from a 2.2 to a 2.4 matte because te had no more glossys, it funny but love the matte too :) mine also had the yellow on the bottem and was a samsung sceen...got a LG thats beyond perfect :)

Which guide explains the difference between matte and glossy?

Hmm...I always thought there was one, but I guess there isn't a "glossy vs matte" guide per se. However, if they are looking into a macbook pro, they should have read this anyways. Maybe we should work on that guide (not that it's going to change anything).

man, there are some real "friendly" people on these boards. and you wonder why there' not as many new posters.

Glossy all the way. The colours are much more vibrant than the matte and the glare is nowhere near the level that others on this post are saying. If you're outdoors you will have the same glare problem as you would with matte.

If you're still undecided go into a store and check out what is best for you. I'm sure you'll find the glossy allure to difficult to resist.

I have a matte display, and when I buy my next MBP I'll be giving glossy a serious second look. I don't see how glossy could be any less usable outside -- the matte display is basically useless in direct sunlight. I like to sit out on the patio at my house and use my portable and the matte display makes this a challenge. I'm willing to give glossy a shot if it will work any better.

One thing, though, that should push you firmly in the matte camp is if you routinely use an external display connected to your MBP. All the cinema displays are matte, and I've found that using a matte cinema display next to a glossy MBP can be a really jarring and uninviting scenario. Side-by-side they're really different.

Let me also say I loved glossy and wanted only glossy, but having the matte, I am not sure if I will ever go back to glossy.

why? am i missing an upside in matte screens other than using it anywhere?

also, people, wen u goto the apple store, i dont know if u ever pay attention, but its really lit, and very bright, and that doesnt effect any of the glossy screens :)

I'll see how you feel a little while from now when you've seen the ten millionth "glossy or matte" thread;)

To be honest, the Apple store down plays the glossy-ness of the glossy screens. I've seen the glossy screens in action at my local FRYS, and they looked much worse there (and that store was brightly lit too) than they did at the Apple Store. It occured to me that Apple simply does a better job of hiding the glossy's glare, while FRYS probably doesn't care too much. That illustrates just how easy it can be to become engulfed by the glare.

OP,

I just purchased a 17" MBP yesterday and am very glad that I went with the matte screen. I've read many forums and people have complained about experiencing eye strain after extensive use on the glossy screen. I'm not sure of the exact reason behind this - perhaps it's the reflective nature of glossy screens or that the perceived contrast is higher.

Just to let you know, this opinion is coming from someone who has done his share of research and has an ultra-picky and perfectionistic personality. Call me crazy or neurotic, but I went to the Apple Store every weekend for months and did a lot of research and experimentation beforehand. I wanted to make sure everything was kosher since this laptop is so expensive (but worth it). Anyways, I would recommend that you go to the Apple Store and see for yourself, but my opinion would be to go with the matte. Not sure if this would influence your decision in any way, but the fact that Lenovo laptops (used by the demanding business crowd) are all using matte screens should tell you something. I read somewhere that they did a survey and something like 82% of users preferred a matte screen. Don't quote me on the number, but it was something quite high. In any case, good luck!
