330's are not top tier Intel or even Sandforce. I am referring to Intel 520 and Samsung 840 Pro. Which are close to twice as fast as Intel 330. Don't use subpar product to draw your conclusions as I specifically only noted the top tier alternatives as OWC is claiming a top tier price for the Accelsior. There are varying degree's of quality in useable firmware and choice of NAND and wear leveling etc... It is why a 240GB 330 is $200.00 and a 520 is $300.00.
I, like Virtual Rain, also have no ill will towards the Accelsior. I am glad it exists but it is not a magic bullet. And for boot disk you are better served with a single modern SATA2 or 3.

I don't dislike the Accelsior - it's a good product. Hat's off to OWC for combining what is effectively a $50 Marvell SATA3 PCIe card with a pair of on-board MacBook Air SSDs and charging an arm and a leg for it.

However, anyone buying a PCIe based SSD solution today, should assess solutions based on their workload, data storage needs, budget, risk tolerance, desires for future proofing, etc. The Accelsior only fits a very specific buyer profile. Claiming it is the "best solution" ignores a variety of factors that go into making an intelligent decision. It may be the "best solution" for you and righteye, but it's certainly not the best solution for me and many others.

I have altered my post so it reads a good solution and not "best" not quite sure why i put best as there is nearly always more than one way for a good solution.
The Accelsior has worked well for me though and have had it in the machine for quite some time so not even sure if some of the other solutions were even available at the time of purchase the sonnet PCIe SSD for example, it was the best solution when i bought it to my knowledge and Lloyd Chambers at diglloyd.com highly recommended it and uses them in his system.

Yeah, ya oughtta be able to wipe the floor with that accelerator just by getting 3 or 4 cheap-o SSDs, 3 or 4 SATA to USB3 dongle adapters, and that 4 dedicated (separate controller per) port highpoint USB3 card.

Card is $120
Adapters are $20ea (x4 = $80)
SSDs @ $125ea (x4 = $500

Total = $700

And that will be clearing 2GB (gigaBYTES) per second regularly! ;)

That's one third the price and over two times the speed of that accelerator. hehehe... It's totally not unusual for MacPro owners to go for stuff like that tho. I know if I were a VAR the MacPro audience would be who's attention I would wanna capture! :D

Agreed that PCIe cards will have their own limitations. But OWC PcIe SSD I have, has performed reasonably good. Looking forward for far more superior products from OWC :)

I like their SSD sleds for Mac Pro and the DVD SATA converter for Macbook's oh and the express eSATA card that sits flush with the case...otherwise, for SSD's they are overpriced because Mac users pay more, right? That in itself is insulting.

If that's insulting to you (and I agree that it is) then OWC is perhaps the most insidiously insulting company on the planet toward mac users - which I also agree they probably are. Insanely overpriced half-spec'd "solutions". But while I agree I also can't put the blame all on them either... Owners of workstation/server grade equipment should know better. A company like OWC in the PC world would have gone broke and out of business as a laughing stock already - or have had to adjusted and normalized.

The controllers have been shown to be stable with corrected firmware. How's that? Intel only uses SF in a few products (520, 320) not the ones they got their reputation for. But their SF implementations are great. I run a 520 in my Mac Pro. I have killed 2 OWC SF drives and have countless other Vertex 3's go bad. Same "controllers".

Sounds like problems are not solely based on the controller and has a lot to do with the SSD manufacturer behind the scenes after all.
