I'm with OP the maximize button along with other UI elements, the font etc... suck! I don't have a time machine backup otherwise I would have downgraded a long time ago.
I suppose you get what you pay for, and in this case we didn't pay anything for this hunk-a-****! Good job apple, you have managed to piss off droves of your loyal customers!

What OS did your mac ship with?

Moom

I've been really happy with Moom to help maximize the size of windows without going full screen. Also, helpful for split screening more than one app and sizing them best for certain tasks. It adds a configurable drop down to the green + button. Hotkeys are also available. It would help with a lot of the issues raised in this thread. Here's the link to the app store version of it:

Yeah... it sucks...

However, ^CMD F stills works most of the time though...

Thanks for that tip. I personally wish they would give us an option to go back to the way it used to work, but at least there is a shortcut. I can't tell you how many times I've "maximized" the window. Apple loves to mess with your learned muscle-memory. Hey! Let's do something for 20 years and then change it for no good reason. :)

Another Apple fail

Dear Apple,

My iPhone screen is roughly 2" x 3" and my monitor is 27". They are not the same. Every time you try to make them the same you create a total mess like this one. After you maximize there is not clear way how to undo it and no consistency at. If you have two monitors it's like playing with Mission Control roulette wheel. This is hands down one of the worst ideas you have come out with yet for trying to make my 27" desktop into iOS!

Please stop! It sounds really cool to make one size fit all but it doesn't work and never will.

Agreed.

I hate the entire "let's look like Dr.Seuss-threw-up-Windows-XP" philosophy than began with iOS 7 and has now contaminated OSX 10.10
It used to be Mac users made fun of windows users every time windows came out with a new version because they had to relearn everything and microsoft took perverse glee in making it as unfathomable as possible. Now it seems Apple has been secretly taken over by bill gates much like Saddam Hussein took over Canada and made changes intended to make everything miserable (South Park).

I'm sick of every time a version comes out it looks uglier and the whole intent seems to be designed to sooth windows users into coming over. F' Them! Leave my Mac alone and stop trying to make it into a hybrid abomination of windows!

The ridiculous bastardization of the green button is a perfect example. Normally these things can be fixed via the terminal. So far the only solution I've heard is a program called Bettertouchtool which allows modifying the green button's behavior.

If anyone comes up with a terminal mod or other program post it, please.

Because they want you to use fullscreen. They aren't going to fix it.

since you can just double click the title bar I don't see it as a big deal.

Well, then Apple is wrong.

Also, double clicking on the title bar doesn't produce a desirable result, the windows are resized to an awkward size.

I'm not sure whether this has been mentioned here before - the free application BetterTouchTool lets you redefine the green window button in OS X 10.10 Yosemite back to "Maximize Window" instead of "Full Screen". Besides that BetterTouchTool apparently offers many more options, especially for Magic Mouse and Apple trackpads.
