Apple keeps wants the systems to be nonuser servicable. Forcing you to go to them for repairs or upgrades. Forcing you to buy more ram and storage at inflated prices. Or Forcing you to buy new system more frequently.

Follow the money.

Maybe thining down laptops makes sense. However not for desktops. Especially with large screens. Haven't heard of many desks collapsing under the weight of iMacs.;)

Don't we all want world peace, so to speak?

Apple is a BUSINESS and people do buy, or don't. Your choice. And all technology does age anyway.

We don't know what Apple has in store for us in 2017, but I'm sure it won't all be negative.

I'm ready to upgrade my mac. Its only two years old and works fine but after seeing the new surface pc I would like something similar in the next mac. I do have an iPad pro so I guess its not that big of deal but I am looking to buy something similar even if I have to pay a premium.

You have not been able to replace the RAM on any model of the 2012 or 2015 Retina MacBook Pro so no surprise they didn't change for the 2016 update.

Well aware of that since I repair them, I meant in a general sense. People talked them up, held off buying the 2015 model only to ironically run out and buy the 'old' model the day after the announcement in some cases.

There have been and are very few iMac rumors... it's a long way to an update.

Ming-Chi Kuo is relatively accurate - at least as analysts go - and he says expect the new iMac in 1H 2017. That date would coincide with the release of appropriate Kaby Lake CPUs and also allow the use of the higher-performance AMD 470 and 480 series GPUs.

TBH I would wait

I have a theory that running an imac too hot will cause damaged to the internal display

I think I will be able to prove it true or false after apple gives me back a third display based on if it develops the same retention when using the mac under heavy load (all I do is use xcode and work so im not even doing anything weird....)

The 2017s should run cooler. I would *not* buy an iMac until the 2017s come out, and we get reports on how hot the things run. Ideally they'd stay below 70C but current imacs get up into the 90Cs quite easily but we will see.

Looks like between the Intel cpu family release dates and the generation change of graphics cards apple delayed or skipped or extended a release cycle. Intel's release dates slipped and both nvidia and amd introduced new architectures with large (near 100%) increased performance.

Yes, after they remove all those heat generating usb-a, display port and magsafe connections things will be better. Especially with the new 0 travel membrane display keyboards.

If you're outside of the USA, buy a refurbished iMac now.

The price of the new iMacs will jump outside of the USA (+ will have the potential to go up in US dollars as well like the MacBook Pro's did).

When the new iMacs come out, you'll have the option to keep or sell your refurb and it won't have dropped in value.

if trump ruins the economy by the time the new imac comes out then perhaps the price of imacs abroad will go down ;)

I should have qualified that statement. A LONG WAY=3+ months, possibly 6+ months. I would guess March-June for iMacs, but they might wait until July or beyond.

I only see a delay that long if Intel slips on releasing Kaby Lake desktop CPUs. I remain of the opinion we'll see them by March at the latest (as part of the iPad update).

Even if you plan to get the current model there is a rationale for waiting.

1. You might be surprised and want the new one.

2. If you decide to go with the old one, you'll likely pay less than you would today.

I just recently decided to go iMac after 4.5 years of using a MacBook pro with a cinema display. I will wait until the redesign though, that way it will look fresh for a while and also support USB 3.1, which the current generation does not.

My plan will be to keep it for 5+ years so getting something that doesn't support the port of the future feels short sighted, like getting HD-DVD six months before it was discontinued.

It's complicated…..

  1. Spending money now on a computer that is expected to be renewed in a few months seems like a bad idea.
  2. But I also think that the current IMac covers all my current and future needs. Now I can access to the top model, but in 2017, with the current policy of price increase, maybe I not be able to in the new computer, or not interest me.

In reference to the new IMac, or all the Macs, the problem is Intel. If we analyze the evolution of CPUs in recent years, there’s no abysmal difference in performance or power between different generations. The main evolution above all is energetic, very important for a notebook, but not so much for a desktop computer.

So I don’t see that new Kaby Lake are going to be such a big jump, the biggest example has been the update of the MacBook, mounted with Skylake. The real performance difference in recent years has been the SSDs.

There’s also the theme of RAM, maybe in the new IMac it’s no longer possible to update the RAM later by oneself. Now you can invest in processor or hard drive and postpone RAM increase.

So analyzing all the possibilities, on the one hand we know how and what the current computer offers, but on the other we don’t know how and what the new one will be.

The main reason to wait for the 2017 refresh is USB-C/TB3 and the AMD Polaris graphics. I agree we're not going to see quantum jumps in CPU or SSD performance.

I wish they'd go with the nVidia Pascal chips in this one. Noone is going to hook up two 5k displays to an iMac, so the requirement that the Pascal chips can't meet is moot in the iMac. Even just a 1070 would be so much better than anything AMD currently has to offer.

ARE YOU CRAZY????????????????????????????????????????????????

They can't put a 1070 in the iMac. Do you know what they'd have to do to fit it?

DID YOU EVEN THINK ABOUT IT BEFORE YOU SUGGESTED IT?

THEY WOULD HAVE TO MAKE IT THICKER

THICKERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Steve would rise up from the dead. Apple stocks would tumble into oblivion. Motorola and Palm would be resurrected and start to compete with iPhone.

No..... I cannot even begin to imagine the consequences Apple would endure if they made a device thicker... THICKER!!!!!!

2017 may be remarkable for a redesign. I certainly do not know what apple will do but there is a good chance the new iMac will bring something new to the game.

Also the iMac could be a lot faster than it is if it was fitted with better heat dissipation. I think it does incredible well consider how thin it is. I personally root for a new iMac pro with large base behind it for PCI slots and GPU.

I still say the best thing to do is wait... if the new stuff is awesome, great, and if it's not you get the current gen for a discount. Win-win. Unless you absolutely need a new computer today.

Actually we may see a thicker iMac if it becomes the sole desktop in the lineup as that would allow it to use 6 and 8 core i7s and higher-clocked AMD GPUs to allow it to better handle tasks that now are the realm of the Mac Pro.

Funny you say this because I had this thought earlier. Not necessarily about thickness per se, but them just making an iMac so powerful they pretty much say that this is the Pro. When you look at the benchmarks, it seems like the current iMac was already nipping at the heels if not outperforming the standard Mac Pro configurations as it is.

I am more than happy to see something like this, but have a feeling that it would be a very minor thickness increase, if it happens at all.

I have the 27' Thunderbolt Display and the depth of it is absolutely means nothing. Never look at it. You should know I am quite obsessed with the way my hardware looks too.

The iMacs thinness looks great when you have a run of them in a larger office, but in smaller spaces the depth is no consequence. I guess Apple will have to work that conundrum out.

For a desktop like iMac, thinness is 99.99% vanity.

Thinned the previous generation to remove the superdrive and necessitate having soldered in ram in 21" and of course the 21" was so much of a danger of crushing desks that it would hold a 2.5" drive only.

Wouldn't be surprised if ram in all was soldered in. Wouldn't be surprised if all the storage memory was soldered in too or at least propriety sortof pcie like new MBP at least.

I get it you're joking, but they could actually make the iMac thinner and still more powerful. All they would have to do is move the computer in the base and stand. There's really no need for a large motherboard these days anymore. If you take the current iMac's base and make it an inch thick and use the neck as a clever heatsink/fan combination fed by heatpipes, you could make the actual display 5mm thick.

It could be a very nice system with no further drawbacks than the existing iMacs, but with better cooling even.
