No smell noted coming from the machine or any of the accessories (well, basically the power brick and the cable) upon opening mine. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

A few weeks ago I have just purchased my Macbook Pro 13-inch. While opening the box I have immediately noticed a strong “mouldy” smell. Short investigation revealed the power cable has very bad smell, like an old house. So I have put a cable on side hoping the smell would go away. Forget it, it just smells further.

So, I went back to the apple shop, reported the issue and purchased a new power cable and with a smile on my face went home. The smile has disappeared from my face in a fraction of a second while opening the small box of the power cable. It was just smelling like very bad mouldy smell, maybe even more as the previous one. So, I have put this cable also for ventilation hoping the smell would go away. Forget it, it just smells...forever.

So, I am here with 2 smelly power cables. I am a veteran apple user (+30 years), but I have never had this bad experience with a apple product.

I wonder, if there is a quality issue or outgoing inspection issue with these cables?

No fun :-( I ended up buying this cable. I like the angled connector and fabric covering.

Not sure what is going on with Apple's cable manufacturing. Luckily there are excellent third party options.

I opened my MBA M1 box yesterday and was blown away by the smell when I opened the box. Upon further investigation I found that the smell was coming from the the USB C cable. I also noticed that the cable is rather stiff and feels like it has a tacky residue on it. Anyone else receive an stinky, stiff cable with a weird feel to it?
Every Mac or apple USB-C cable I've opened in the last couple years has too, smelled 'like' mildew, It's not though, just residue or off gassing from the recyclable rubber. Just need to get a damp towel and wipe the cable really well - the smell will go away. Took me a while to figure that out!

I got a bad cable purchased separately as well - https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/toxic-smelling-apple-cable-usb-c-2-meter-100w-power.2297674/

I went through FOUR cables and not a single one was good!

All the same as what you describe - tacky sticky surface with noxious odor coming off!

I even tried to air out one of the cables for a full day and full night outside in the wind and sun, to no avail!

I spoke with Apple on the phone for 40 minutes about this and had a senior customer advisor file a case for this.

If you have the same issue, I would encourage you to call them!

My case number with apple is 101394091664.

The smell is so bad it makes my sinuses burn!

I also filed a report with the Consumer Products Safety Commission:

Report No. 20210524-2A7C3-2147363940
