I recently sold my old 15" MBP and replaced it with a 13" MBA Ultimate as my sole machine. Loved it. Much faster, slim design, comfortable to carry and use virtually anywhere, ran silent.

Then I took it back and exchanged it for the new high-end 15" MBP. Why?

Well, I do A LOT of reading on a daily basis. The text on the high-res 13" display was just too small for me. I tried zooming in within each app, but it was a pain to do. I missed the larger and more readable text on the standard-res 15" MBP.

I am probably in the vast minority because it seems like everyone loves the high-res displays, but readability is more important to me than screen real estate. Just something to consider.

Including nitpicking

Look, I'm not trying to pick fights with anyone. All I tried to do with my original reply to this topic was offer some useful relative information to the original posters question and what do I get? Ridiculed, and called names, thanks a lot.

I thought your post was apt and funny. My comment about being "socially challenged" was in reference not to you but to a poster who had reacted hostilely to the use of "dope" by an earlier poster.

gwsat, you kinda look like qui gon jinn [Qui-Gon Jinn] in your dp
I am honored. No one has ever before compared my appearance to a Jedi master's and certainly not to a Jedi master who looked like Liam Neeson.

What discussions about "dope," the social skills of posters, or Jedi masters have to do with whether to buy an MBA or a 15 inch MBP escapes me but they have been an interesting diversion nonetheless. Maybe this thread really is done.:)

That was a gracious apology and I, for one, appreciated it.

Back to the topic at hand for a moment, I have had 17 inch Macs since 2003. Although I love my MBA, somewhere down the line I will likely replace my current 17 inch MBP with a 15 inch model. I still use iTunes for CD ripping and HandBrake for DVD ripping on my MBP. I do a lot of both. As good as the MBA is for most things, the MBP is better for ripping discs and I really do need the best tool for the job. I should be able to get another year out of the MBP before I need to replace it.

gwsat - for Handbrake, from what I've read out there, even the 13" 2011 MBPs would put your 17" or our 13" MBAs to shame by a huge margin and the quads on the 15/17 are just absolute beasts. But waiting another year for a cooler version of processors shouldn't hurt anything.

Understood. The i series chips, particularly the i7, are much faster at disc ripping than their predecessors. I feel sure that when I finally put my Santa Rosa MBP out to pasture, its successor's processor will be even faster than the current i7s. Fortunately, for the moment at least my old MBP handles the job just fine. Anyway, I will be interested to see how the MBPs are configured a year from now.
