Eee PC all the way. I bought one a couple of weeks ago. It has kept me so entertained for the past 3 weeks. I've installed ubuntu. Have XP booting from an internal USB drive that I've installed. I've installed numerous internal components. And the thing only costs 399. Now it works just as well as my 3 year old desktop that runs windows.

Next up Leopard on the Eee pc. It's been done but with a lot of problems. The will be fun to try to get the drivers working. I don't have much experience with Mac OSX and driver problems. It will be a nice new challange.

I feel your pain. Having been working with windows for a very long time and switched over in January.

I was amazed at how much extra time I had to, you know work! Instead of having to worry about is my system up to speed, did I get the latests virus update, did I remember to setup my scheduled back ups, did I remember to clean my HD, did ....... you get the picture.

This is great, didn't realise how much time all of that took.
Same here. Switched over in '05, and I do kinda miss messing around with stuff, just to see how things work and whatever.

However, I agree that I am far more productive on my Mac.

I had this for a while. I missed constant defragging and running AVG. Took me a while to adjust actually and when I did end up getting an intel mac (with XP) I accidentally let it get all dirty.

I put a Hackintosh together a couple of years ago, which led me to getting a MacBook. After I got the real Mac I more or less used it all the time, but there was something - missing. So I upgraded the memory & HD for the MacBook. Which took all of about 5 minutes, and worked right off the bat - what was the fun in that? I realized that I - LIKED - tinkering with my machines, but I hate HAVING to tinker with my machines. However - I could still tinker trying to keep my Hackintosh running the latest version of OSX, while I could use my MacBook as my actual computer. Think of the fun - a simple update could wipe out the whole OS! Then Apple ruined the fun AGAIN - now I have a Time Machine drive on my Hackintosh(yes, it works perfectly), so when I wipe out the OS, all I have to do is restore it from the TM disk.

This is a really great post. Seriously, i have never laughed so hard over (nor identified so much with) anyone else's insights into the fine lines between fun and insanity in personal computing.

Heh, if you're getting bored of not having problems, try installing KPSaver for a little simulated kernal panic fun! I feel your pain, though, I rarely have to fix anything on my own computer!
