I went with great expectations to the shop today to see the new MBPs. What ugly heavy crap.

The most off putting thing is the thickness and weight of these machines. To make them appear thinner they apparently rounded the corners. Otherwise it would have been obvious what huge technological failure these bricks are. They feel as if I just moved back 15 years in computing history. These MBP are not cool anymore.

There are tons of people who want bigger screens but don't need more computing power and don't want to carry such heavy machines.

Cheers

I mean, they are barely any thicker or heavier than previous generations they just don't have tapered edges to give illusions of fake thinness.

The previous MacBook Pro 16 was 4.3 lbs and the new one is 4.7. Not a huge difference… only 9% heavier.

And the difference in thickness is even less… .64 in for the previous model and .66 for the new… only 3% thicker.

The new MacBook Pro 16 is actually thinner than the 2015 MacBook Pro 15, so no, they did not go back 15 years lol. The 2006 MacBook Pro was 6.8 lbs and 1.0 in thick, MUCH heavier and thicker than the new models. Kids these days don’t know what a thick and heavy laptop is.

Fun fact, they really aren't thicker than the MBPs which they replace; you just fell for an optical illusion.

4.8 pounds for the M1 Max.

This is why you should get a desktop... your desk does all the heavy lifting for you.

I mean, it's not as if they stopped making the MacBook Air for those who want thinner and sleeker.
I have the new 16" which to me is a bit to big to carry around and always has been, even with the 2019 16".

I bought the M1 MBA for that purpose if I ever need to take a laptop with me. The MBA is fully capable of doing what I use the 16" MBP for, I just like the bigger screen on the 16" so I often have bought the two different sized laptops over the years.

Stick to the air or buy a pc. The MacBook Pro obviously wasn't designed for for you.

Are you insane? I bought a specced out 4 tb 16 pro max.

It’s an absolute joy to use. Any program you throw at it, it crushes with absolute speed. Stays cool, without fan noise.

The screen is a joy to use with rich blacks. Great sound quality from the speakers. The heft feels nice yet still light and able to keep on your lap.

If you can’t afford it that’s okay. If you can though, talk after you use it for a few weeks.

Function over form any day. I like ‘em thicc anyway.

Ohh, I disagree. I think this is the coolest computer I've ever owned, by a long shot.

There are tons of people who want bigger screens but don't need more computing power and don't want to carry such heavy machines.
...and those people are called "not the target market for these".

The 16” is a desktop replacement. The size and weight is comparable/better than the typical large desktop replacement laptops/gaming laptops.

The 14” is a portable workstation. The size for the battery life and performance, again, is comparable/better to other portable workstations.

For purely portable users, Apple intended the MacBook Air for that segment.

I do agree that for now, Apple doesn’t have any solutions for those wanting a thin-n-light larger screen laptop. It doesn’t seem to be a popular segment as there are not that many options on the Windows world either.

Apple addressed literally almost every complaint with the previous generation models and delivers a product with flying colors and getting incredibly high praise across the board and yet, people still find reasons to trash them. I’m not the target buyer for these but damn did Apple nail it. The design is, well, Apple and industrial. However, they clearly put function probably ahead of form for the first time in a while and I say that was a worthy trade off, while still delivering a nice looking product with second to none build quality.

Great expectations? Doubtful. You came here to whine. That's fine & you're entitled to.

The new computers are a repudiation of a lot of the design decisions Apple has made over the years by Apple themselves. They actually listened to feedback from customers. How about that?

Most of us didn't want thinness for the sake of thinness, nor did we want one port to rule them all because not everything should have an adapter dongle thingy. Actually, a lot of people would argue:

A. The changes Apple made in 2016 really hurt the product; and,
B. The changes made with this redesign were long overdue.

I've been using Apple's portables since the late 90s - a.k.a. the PowerBook G3. These new MacBook Pros are AWESOME (as I type this response from one now). These are hitting their target market. Everyone else would want the MacBook Air anyway. I think the MacBook Air is Apple's most popular Mac & the changes rumored to be coming to that line are exciting. That will probably be way more up your alley & down your street.

Pretty much, it's really rare for Apple to basically address almost all our complaints when we went from the rMBP design 2012-2015 to the much maligned 2016-2020 Touch Bar generation. After owning the MBP 16 M1Max for 24 hours, I've come to like it more and more. The new ones feel as expensive as they are. The TB generation felt a bit flimsy...
My main angst is the loss of gaming in bootcamp, but I knew that going in...

I noticed your signature says M1 MacBook Air. Still have that? I have loved my M1 Air. I feel the M1 in the Air was exactly what the Air needed.
