I picked up the base M4 Mac Mini as a supplement to my studio. For $499 at MicroCenter it's a smoking deal and I just use an external SSD.
After experiencing the M4 single core performance, I'm not sure I could ever recommend anything less than this gen again. This "feels" faster than my M3 Max--even though I know it doesn't have the same headroom for large projects. So, yeah, go for anything M4 generation.
