Finally I found a thread about this topic with similar behaviors that really got me upset for months. I have been testing 2 mac mini M1, 1 macbook 14 m1 pro and now a mac studio m1 max with LG 35wn65b and I can't get the sleeping mode work properly. The monitor wakes up during the night randomly every 10-15-30 min and I have tried everything: removing all network activities, changing cables from usb-c to hdmi, different docks and even turning off the monitor with some unexpected waking problem like screen in the bottom 1/3 of the monitor or even completely black screen at the point that I had to hard stop my machine. At least I am not alone but if you have any further suggestion please, let me know. Even if I had to switch back to BigSur it would be ok.

DJ:

Try this for one or two nights.
What happens if you DISCONNECT the display?

And I know you haven't asked, but...
The SURE way to prevent this would be to shut down the MBP each night, and just reboot in the morning...

NEWS and EDIT:

I still experience the same behavior even with the current latest version of the Monterey 12.3.1.
There is no workaround that I could find so far, and I tried all possibilities:
  • I removed the HDMI cable (external monitor) before I close the MBP lid, in the morning it was again restarted
  • I tried to put it in the sleep manually (clicking the power button for 1 sec), then I closed the lid while the HDMI was not connected, it again restarted at night
  • I closed all network (Wifi and wired connection), this did not make a difference

So I am really unsatisfied with this situation. I could go to the Apple store to check what is happening, but I believe they provide me with no solution there. They even may try to replace the motherboard, which I do not want to go through. I believe the problem is not hardware, but software-related 99%.

I experienced similar things, but I did not pay much attention because I thought this was the problem with my monitor. Now I understand why it happened.

I tried disconnecting the external HDMI display before I close the lid, as I have written above, this did not help me. Same restarting problem occured always.
And yes the exact solution is to shut down the MBP, but this is a silly workaround for me. So what is the point of having a "sleep" function?

  1. Have you tried to restart system and use MacBook without external monitor to see if issue is still happening without it ? maybe before you sleep, you could disconnect external monitor and restart machine and sleep the machine.
  2. I don't know much about MacOS and wondering if there is any way to reset/delete device info so that OS creates connected external devices info newly instead of using already cached old one that was created in previous OSX version.
  3. if none of these works then you could think about re-installing OSX. Basically with time machine, you can save current OS setting then re-install OSX from scratch. After re-install OSX, you first should connect external monitor and sleep the machine before installing any device/program/touching system setting.

1. Yes, I tried these. I even tried to update the MacOS Monterey to the latest current version. Nothing helped so far.

2. I am not sure about this option as well. There must be some .plist file, maybe, I can try to find and remove them.

3. I am right now avoiding this option because there are lots of users who are having the same problem like me, and restored the system, then having the problem again and again. For this reason, I do not think a system wipe helps me. But in either case, this is a nice idea, you are right. But of course this is not the way that Apple does these Macbooks to be used.
