i just got my MBP and its perfect aside from the left having about a 1-2mm gap. ill admit it does bug me a bit, but ill get over it.
and i think i will try the resting books on it over night to see if that fixes it,
it wont damage the screen or anything will it??

i dont think it would as long as the books aint really heavy..

For the record, my first MBP (had other issues and needed to be returned) had this problem. Heres a tip: Every night when it is off or asleep, turn it upside down and let its own weight press down on the uneven corner. That should help the problem and perhaps even fix it. My second MBP is perfect, however :)

I think he/she was refering to the way the Macbooks are held down magnetically not by latch rather than the way the arms are brought down by magnetism in the MBP's

Yes I was. Thanks for clarifying:) However, now I know what cmwoodall was trying to describe. Thanks Kilamite.

Well, I tried the weighty book regime for a few nights and it has made a slight improvement.

Perhaps it will cure the problem completely if I do this every night for the next 10 years. ;)

Sadly this problem has stemmed from the days of the Powerbook G4's. It used to bother me but my laptops are generally open for most of the time so rarely do I ever see it closed with the uneven gap between the top and bottom halves.

mine was like that too, i've called AppleCare and they said they want to replace it with the new one. hopefully the new one would ok...:)

I had this problem

Left side had a 3-4mm large gap than right side. I applied some gentle pressure on the each side of the lid with my hands and evened it up.

Other than that, my MBP is perfecto.

i won't accept paying 3 grand for a product that is Imperfect out of the box. Nor should anyone else. If you accept it then you just give apple permission to continue to have low quality control. And yes, I do believe Apples quality control is low when compared to other notebooks of the same level.

The lid on my 3rd MBP seems to be fairly even (more than the 1st 2 were). However, it seems like pressing the latch and getting the lid open takes a little more work on this one. A simple press of the thumb doesn't do it. I actually have to stick the nail side of my finger into the narrow button and press a little harder for it to release. Anybody else have this problem?

I had the same problem. When I close the lid by pressing between the latched, I had a gap on the right and none on the left.

What I did to solve this is closing the MBP by pressing a little bit to the right of the right latch. That way, the right latch is pressed more firmly. After I had done this, there is no more gap on my MBP.

I wouldn't have thought putting pressure on the screen would be a good idea unless it was covering the whole surface area.

If anything, I'd put the books hanging off the edge to where the latches are to avoid putting pressure on the display.

Perspective

i won't accept paying 3 grand for a product that is Imperfect out of the box.

Just to put this in perspective, if you bought a dell and called them to complain that the closed laptop had a difference in gap of 3-4mm, they would laugh at you.

I had a gap on my PB. I could have asked about possible repair/replace but never bothered and don't remember exactly how much of a gap there was because I got a new screen anyway (whitespots on the original).

It didn't bother me and did not harm the PB in anyway.

Repaired it, I did not fully understand how, but its the same machine.
Amazing technicians.

Apple rocks.

they use heavier books :D

i had this problem on my alubook in the G4 days. i folded a piece of paper to make it like 5mm high, taped it in the middle of the machine just under the trackpad button and put a few books on each lid corners :D
