Actually I do work with files bigger than 20MB all the time. My iTunes is comprised of many lossless audio files. Maybe defrag will do the trick....

Any freeware that does defragmentation?

Now that's a tricky one. I have only heard of bad options for the Mac. Maybe someone else who has more experience with those apps can help you better. Sorry.

I've got the same problem. My MBP is getting slower daily. Maybe because of all the programs I've tried. I am thinking of formatting it and reinstalling Mac OS X 10.4

I'm afraid to get a MBP now...i've been saving up for a year but I need to rely on it for college...:(

The MBP is stupid-fast. I have the 15.4" C2D model and it has not slowed down at all, and this includes running Parallels (40gb partition for Windows with up to 1gb of RAM allotted to it when running).

It's not Window$, there is no registry that fills up and gets corrupted and slows the entire system down. Or hidious user profile that gets corrupt.
Only if the app leaves startup items or so it will slow down. But reinstalling is very drastic and not necessary.

Agreed.

Maybe if the OP described his symptoms more completely, somebody might be able to give some useful advice...

Essentially the only really noticeable symptom is what I've described in the OP.

I experience about a 1 second delay from the time I release the command key from a command-tab app switch to when the app shows up. This never happened before. It's only in the last couple of days that I've noticed this.

It's not a major system-wide slow-down, but it is annoying.

That's your only symptom? Maybe you've got a bad preference file somewhere, but I don't know which one it might be. This sounds very minor in any event. Don't do anything drastic in an effort to correct it, is my advice.

FWIW, I've figured out what the problem is.

I thought I'd let you guys know what the issue was:

You may have seen mention of "Fumo" -- a modified command interface for Quicksilver. That's what it was!!! And I wasn't even using the smoking version, which I would assume would be slightly taxing on the system.

It never occurred to me that a simple appearance mod would result in such a noticeable speed decrease -- especially given that it should really be running in the background (the UI, that is).

Well, there ya go. No need to defrag, etc. -- but I thought I'd warn everyone about Fumo...

well i'm starting to see more and more problems with the macbook pros...i figured it would be fine eventually..the newer ones would have the heat issues but it would get fixed and all that but more problems are popping up with the more recent mbp's rather the the first and second week ones

Heat issues have largely been dealt with to the extent solutions are feasible at this point. Moreover, heat issues really has nothing to do with the point of this thread or your original response concerning reliability. So again, what are the issues you are seeing that impact performance and reliability?

Lastly, please explain what you mean by the underlined text. I am at a total loss on this one.
