I cracked open my MBP in the first week of ownership :D Temps were WAY TOO HIGH. Have a look to see why. Temps impoved ~15-20C or so. Originally from this thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/316736/

Oh the HORROR!

Now the heat pipe cooling system before:

Here is a CLEAN logic board - From left to right: GPU, North Bridge, CPU:

Proper paste applied - I have some special diamond dust thermal paste that is VERY durable so I used it - I have seen others apply the paste to the chips AND to the heat sinks, THIS IS BAD, VERY BAD!!! ONLY APPLY TO CHIPS.

And finally the cleaned heat pipe cooler:

I saw your thread before and I must say this is very disappointing. When did you purchase this unit?

I mean, right now my CPU is at 119 degrees with just iTunes and Safari. Now to me that is not very hot because my MB would run in the high 150's with just iTunes open.

Seeing your Logic Board with the crap all over it is a disgrace. I think anybody with common sense would know that adding that much won't do any good. How are your temps after re-applying the paste? I saw the guy with the MBP CD (Rev. A) who had like a 20 degree decrease in temps and I was amazed.

Do you think that 119 degrees (F) is hot for just Safari and iTunes opened?

Now...looking through everybody's temps...why is the Airport card so damn hot?? On top of that why is there a 10-20 degree difference with the GPU Diode and the Heatsink?

Fans running at 3000 rpm.

Degrees in Fahrenheit btw, so don't be alarmed.

Wow thats odd. I have the exact same CPU Temp, but my GPU (diode and heatsink) is about 10* higher than yours...

Putting static sensitive electronics on cloth is pretty stupid. You're lucky you didn't fry anything.

I've been doing this a LONG time, never fried a thing though static electricity. Have you? Didn't think so.

To the others, I bought this machine in June of '07, was an early SR. My idle temps now are ~40-45C or so.

Yeah, I've seen plenty of circuit boards ruined from static due to sloppy handling over the years.

Being lucky doesn't make it smart.

I wouldn't let you work on any of my equipment.

Macbook specs in sig.
About 4 months old.

Normal running temps range anywhere from 80* F idle, to 140* F at max processing playing Call of Duty 4.

I don't have any temps to post, but I am looking into getting a MBP around the time Montevina comes out. I remember hearing about the thermal paste issue a while back. Is this something everyone has to do when they get a new MBP, apply thermal paste?

Have you used your MBP for gaming or maxed out performance of the GPU?

I did that with both CPU and GPU when I got it in order for the horribly applied thermal paste to settle in and I think that might be the reason why my MBP is running very cool.

No not yet. I will probably play a game today and try that out.

Also, could somebody answer about the thermal paste issue. Is opening up the MBP and adding thermal paste something everyone has to do when they get a new MBP?
Thanks!

You dont want wanna go adding to whats already there, you need to clean up
the mess they made while assembling your MBP then re-apply it correctly

And no its not something you have to do,but if you ever have to upgrade your
harddrive or some other internal fix take alook and then decide

I asked this already but didn't get an answer

Are there any companies out there that will clean and reapply the paste. I am ok with opening my laptop up, but kinda scared of going to that level. Any suggestions?

I'm interested at what temps people are seeing with both cores pinned at 100% (lots of hard disk activity would be a bonus). I've been doing handbrake encodings for the past few days so these are the hottest temps I expect to see from my mbp. It's pretty hot, and sometimes I wonder if the machine can really sustain this type of heat over long periods of time. This is a c2d 2.6ghz (late 2007), 7200hd and 4gb.

My first generation MBP runs really hot compared to the other computers here. In normal usage, meaning Opera, Itunes, Adium, Mail, iCal and Shakespeer the cpu temperature is around 53-56C. In hard core use, it usually goes to 82C, but i have managed to push the CPU all the way to 96C while converting a video in VisualHub.

Here are my idle temps. I haven't done anything intense yet.

so i take it you guys don't have problems using istat? i read some people stating that istat was causing them problems that the MBP wouldn't wake from sleep

Never once had a problem with istat Pro and my MBP.

Temps in F and C below. Light duty web browsing going on, a rather slow day today. :)
