Hi guys, I want to upgrade from my current 2.16 CD to a new SR C2D; either a 2.2Ghz or 2.4Ghz.

But I was wondering if there was a noticeable Temperature differance between the two models while say... ripping or burnning a cd, Moving a big folder, encoding video (the more intensive one for me), or anything else.

So I'm putting a request for your MBP SR Temperatures. Hopefully a lot of people will post results.

Before you yell at me, I did look on Apple's sight and googled it, but I didn't come up with anything, probably because I'm the only one who cares.

Thanks to anyone who posts.

That's a lot better than mine. My 2.2SR with msn, skype, firefox and a few more is at around 55C.

I was expecting the 2.2Ghz to run cooler. I also heard that Apple underclocks the GPU to help save power and to run cooler is this true?

The temperatures of computers and laptops are completely dependent upon the surroundings. If one user has their windows open on a hot day, opposed to another user with some refreshing AC, the temperatures will read accordingly. That's probably the reason for such varying results.

Edit:
I wouldn't doubt they underclock video cards and processors. It saves battery life and cools the computer considerably.

I don't think it's that consistent and I think that mine might be on the hotter side (my 3+ year old Dell running side by side is at around 40 to 45C). 25C room temperature.

This was just after burning a DL DVD, listening to iTunes, copying data back and forth between my MBP and external HD and installing Parallels..

Those are temperatures I can live with. I thought there'd be a big temperature increse over my 2.16 CD MBP. But this is really decent.

Whats wrong with your current MBP, or you are a computer addict that needs to have the latest...

pretty much yeah. But I'm two versions behind and am running out of HD space with my 100 GB hd. Also, I heard the Core Duo's don't support 64 Bit unlike the Core 2 Duo's. And one of the things I love about Leopard is the full (supposedly) 64 bit support.

50C under load? cmon guys be realistic. SRs from what i've read are maybe a few degrees cooler than 2nd Gens. not by much.

For me, my c2d 2.33 is 41-43C on battery with just word and light browsing.
plugged in, i get ~55.

are you even gonna use that? Leopard will fly in that machine, I have currently running a Leo Beta in the same manchine, and it screams.
Your computer is ultra fast!!!, you will not see any difference in the SR MBP if you are not a Combustion, Maya, 3d guy.
My 2cents

Heres mine:

iTunes, Adium and a dozen tabs in firefox on a table with no air circulation underneath =

This thing get HOT when running games though...ill post those readings when I run something heavy

shoot whered did my picture go?

mid forties low 30s

I most have bad thermal paste then.

My bloody fan's rarely come on when I'm using Boot Camp to play games (the base gets ridiculously hot).

When I restart after having a play or two on Boot Camp, the temperature monitor says my CPU is at 78'C, and the GPU is running hot at 75'C.

It cools down after about 10 seconds since the fans come on full blast, but it is worrying that Boot Camp doesn't put the fans on at a lower temp.

He will notice a huge difference especially since Leopard will be 64bit. And very soon more and more programs will be optimized for 64bit.

I noticed a bump in gaming performance from my C2D to my SR C2D.

43 at the moment (4000RPM)
with light browsing + itunes, I have 38-45
with WoW, I got up to 70c. Range = 60-70. (6000RPM)

WOW that's cool...

My MBP SR 2.4

Complete idle = 60 C

Load = 90 C (fan at 6000RPM, within 5 minutes)

SMC Fancontrol

I noticed the differance using a friends 2.16 C2D and I have a 2.16 CD... so a speed differance running 2.2/2.4 C2D SR + 64 bit Leopard should be very very noticeable.

Plus, I already told my brother I'd sell him my old one. That way it works out for the both of us. He gets his first Mac and I get a newer Mac!
