To be honest, and I know people won't like this but I am entitled to voice my opinion, but I feel you deserve it. Anyone who keeps their backup right beside the original data is asking for trouble, especially when you swan off for half an hour leaving everthing out in the open and on display in an unfamiliar environment. What the hell were you thinking? I bet the thief couldn't believe his luck nor that someone would be so stupid.

It wasn't the best idea to have everything in one place, but to say that he deserves it is just ridiculous.

Well your opinion is crap. You don't know anything about his office. Where I worked this summer, there was strict security and a great environment. Theives would not just be patrolling around the office. Maybe he felt he was in a safe environment. What's the point in expressing your opinion here anyway? The guy is clearly asking for sympathy in the matter.

Also, keeping backups are not mainly for theft. It's for a failed hard drive or something like that.

'Deserve' is a really strong word for you to use you know. I think that the reason that people like to blame people for their misfortune is so that they can convince themselves that it couldn't happen to them.

Well your opinion about my opinion being crap is crap. He was in a new environment so in my mind it is bloody stupid to leave everything unattended for so long, and by the way it may not have mattered how secure the building was as it could have been an inside job.

I bet you what, it will have been an expensive lesson for him and doubt he will ever be so foolish in the future. All IMOHO.

shaker..i think a few of us were thinking this and i'm sure the OP has thought it too, but there's really 2 issues here:
1. how to get his stuff back
and 2. backing up procedures.

most of us are trying to help with #1. #2 is pretty obvious. I personally would have put the ipod right in my pocket, but then again, i read alot of similar posts so i am one paranoid cat these days.

Cheers,

I have 2 backups next to my laptop. Both are external firewire drives. In your opinion what should I do with them instead of leaving them on the table beside my laptop?

What an awful thing to happen!

I believe that life is a great leveler and the thief has got something terrible awaiting him. You, on the other hand deserve a stroke of luck.

Anyway, the police bit: has that company got cctv? They should shake down their employees too! Someone would have seen something.

Good luck!

I'm sorry to hear about your loss - it is very sad that your Macbook Pro was stolen, and even sadder that your employers' site is insecure.

I hope that you are able to have your equipment replaced, and more importantly be compensated for the work that you lost.

Losing all your data really sucks; however, it sounds to me like you're quite well off and should be able to purchase a new machine no problem. :D

If I'm wrong and you're actually poor, my apologies.

What??? So, if someone can actually afford to replace a stolen item it's no big deal. And it's only a bad thing if don't have much money??? Not to pass judgement, but I take it you're not very well off and jealous of people who are.

If I'm wrong my apologies...

Okay, no one DESERVES to have ANYTHING stolen from them, no matter the case. That's kinda like saying someone DESERVES to get their car stolen if it's parked somewhere other than in their garage...bah, I could go on forever.

If that's you're opinion, so be it...everyone is entitled to one.

Anyway, my company is "looking into" covering it. Hopefully everything works out.

And for the record...I'm not rich by any means. I'm just a lowly cad tech.

In my mind its like parking your car on the wrong side of the tracks with the keys in the ignition, the engine ticking over, the doors unlocked, the windows wound down, and parked beside a giant illuminated billboard saying 'please steal me'.

Anyway no doubt you have learnt your lesson and will not be so foolish in the future with your and/or your employers physical and intellectual property.

That seems like the worst way to treat a car, so using that analogy would mean he did the absolute worst thing you can do with a computer. IMOHO though, if he had walked down the street and given his computer to a homeless guy clearly strung out on heroin, asked him to hold his computer bag while he went to buy a pretzel, given him his pw as a show of good faith, that would have been much worse than leaving his stuff packed up in a conference room. So then, how would you describe my situation, in terms of car theft? Or is your car theft analogy simply idiotic hyperbole?

A person can be forgiven one insensitive, cruel post, to a fellow Macophile looking for some comradery and support after losing his Mac to a thief, but a second one, in the same thread, in the same day, to the same unfortunate person is ... well ... being an a$$!

You'd already pointed out the obvious in your first post, which I'm sure everyone else, including the original poster already knew. Give the man a break! Sheesh!

As I stated it was "in my mind". You obviously have differing security and maintenance standards far below mine.
