Same issues on my MBP with the latch!

I took it in to get it repaired for a problem with the keyboard. When i got it back the keyboard was fixed and there was a HUGE scratch in the case above the F# row. I told them I would not accept that as it was not scratched when I brought it in (scratch is an understatement. Gouge is more like it). They agreed that they did it when they were putting the new keyboard in and 'it happens' and I said "well fix it. it happens". They fixed it and when I came back again there were two screws that weren't seated properly! I told them to fix it and it they said that the top case was not on right so they had to fix it again! Now I'm 14 days without my machine.

Ok 3 days later I am back and they give me the machine with A DIFFERENT GOUGE in the same area! I am livid! AND the latch is jacked up just like this picture! I needed the machine back as I was leaving for New York the next day. They said that if I took it back that I could bring it back in but that they can't promise they can fix it as 'these things happen'.

ANNOYED!

So fast forward a year and I buy a new MBP for my coworker and it kernel panics on startup. Great. I do a fresh install.. the DVD drive sounds like a freaking bi-plane! I take the machine back.. they give me a new one and it has a huge dent in the track pad. Luckily I was still at the store when I opened it (note to everyone! Open the machine at the store and inspect it). To make things worse this DVD drive also sounds like a bi-plane. So I ask to have another.. they agree but said if the next one had any defects that I would get my money back and I could go elsewhere to buy one!!!! Unreal.

The next machine was ok (so far) so let's cross our fingers.

I say this as a mac lover with over 10 macs purchased in the last few years. It feels like they've gotten sloppy.

People come to complain, and remember with so many more people having macs, the number of complains is going to rise, while the percentage of complains will probably remain the same.

I am happy for you and your positive experience with these models. But, let me suggest that to ignore the trends here in this thread is just DENIAL.

I wish you only the very best experience with your Macs and I would love to have the same experience. But when I look at stats like these, it seems like a little better than 60-40 chance that I would get a pristine new machine. What's more depressing is that the apparent record of Apple aftercare seems even chancier. Sorry but I don't play the lottery either.

The only thing that keeps me coming back here in idle hope for good news is how very, very much I do NOT want to enter the VISTA world. I want my mac notebook experience to be a good one but this still seems like the Land of Misfit Toys.

Apple is like the American automotive industry in the 1980s. iDodge.

My first iPod video had dead pixels. My first MBP had a deformed case and warped screen.

That's 50% defects, Jobs! :apple:
