Solution on Mac Mini

For those with a non-Intel Mac Mini, here's what solved the problem for me: "Mac mini: How to reset the PMU": http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2183

Apple says to use this only as a last resort, but for me it solved 3 issues:
- Freed up a frozen mouse.
- Allowed an external USB drive to appear on the desktop.
- Enabled writes to a DVD in the CD/DVD drive for the first time in months.

Like many on this thread, I had the 0x8002006E error but could not clear it with compressed air, a Laser Lens Cleaner (skipDr Cyclone Clean), reducing the write speed, even to 2x, or standing on my head.

One Happy Camper. =D

I'm on a macbook alu and I also can't burn for the life of me... :/
I get a medium error 0x0c in toast and the usual 0x8...... error that most people have been getting on these forums. I don't see why the cd brand would make a difference.
I've tried removing the battery alt apple r + power p , deleting the finder file but still no luck..im getting quite frustrated, and in the windows vs mac battle that im currently waging against my roomates , i must say this is a chip in my shield..im looking to transfer the image to my buddies windows laptop to burn the image now ..and I really don't want too.
any ideas?

Solution

Had the exact same problem on both my laptops. A CD/DVD cleaner (as mentioned before in other posts) fixed it completely, in a matter of minutes. It cost me only $10.95 at Staples. Please do not dismantle your disk drive, anyone. All you need is this cleaner.

Having short of the same issue on iMac

Used a cd cleaner and it seemed to fix my problem as well. so glad it was that easy!

0x8002006E Error code superdrive

It's the brand of DVD or CD. Seriously.

I bought a brand new iMac a month ago and a spindle of Sony CD-R blanks.
First couple of times I burned using finder and Toast 9 the discs burned ok.. However, the drive was spinning at warp speed. The desk was vibrating and a horrendous noise was coming out of the drive. Worried.
Then I kept getting the error message. I found a good post that recommended resetting disc permissions in 'Disk Utility'.
This worked once, then the drive went went haywire again.
About to give up a friend came over with a different brand of blank CD-r. (GT pro CD-R)
This worked. So I bought another spindle. WORKS EVERYTIME.
An interesting thing is that the sony CD-R discs (which seem to work about 30% of the time) are completely white with feint silver writing on the top surface. The GT pro ones are orange and black. Could it be that the drive needs something 'tangible'? That the Sony discs 'fool' the drive somehow? The drive spins out of control most of the time with the Sony discs, perhaps it can't judge the burn speed correctly?

God knows. Anyway I hope this helps.

solution?

I found on my mac book if i lowered the write speed to x8 or x2 it also solved this problem

I just got that error on my less than two week old MacBook Pro. I know it's not processor speed and shouldn't be a dirty lens as this is the second disk I've had in the drive, first was the install disk for MS Office for Mac and then this blank Memorex CD-R. My first attempt went through initializing then said finalizing and spit it out and gave the error. I didn't do anything, just closed iTunes, put the disk back in, and attempted to burn the same CD again and it worked. I've listed to several tracks to be sure that they burned correctly and so far I see no problem.

Now I don't know whether I should be concerned or not. Ultimately it worked, but I don't like getting these sorts of errors on a brand new computer. If the problem reoccurs I will definitely call Apple, but at this point I am torn. Driving over an hour to a Apple Store for a Genius Bar appointment seems like a waste of time at this point as I've only had the problem once, but that one time occurred on my first ever attempt to burn a CD. Ugh! I guess I'll wait and see if it happens again, I bought Apple Care for a reason but it is still frustrating to get any error messages like this on a brand new machine!
