Wow, I can not believe that your MagSafe power cord "melted" atticus1178!

It is good that you caught it when you did, who knows what might have happened if you would have let it go. I guess I will have to keep a careful eye on my MagSafe cord.

Wow, mine has melted too. It had started to get loose like the wires had come disconnected, and when I looked at it (after viewing this thread), it most definitely has some melted spots. I noticed it was really hot when I was messing with it to try to get it to charge, so I immediately pulled it out. Glad I did! Sucks too because I won't have my computer for school tomorrow, though I'll try the computer store on campus, they're an AASP. Hopefully they're be able to replace it on the spot. I'm afraid to use it now though, since it was hotter than the main part of the adaptor has ever gotten, hot enough to burn if I put my fingers on there more than a second or two. That thing could probably have started a fire had I left it.

Well, the Computer Store here on campus said they didn't stock the adaptors  and they'd have to send the whole computer in for warranty verification  so I'm just going to have to take it down to the Millenia store. Fortunately it's not too far away, but I need the computer for school today (can't write fast enough to keep notes in my history class, the guy talks fast!), so I'm braving it. I'm keeping the adaptor/computer very still and checking the heat on the plug often, and so far it seems to be ok. If I get it charged up enough to last through the class I'll avoid using it, but if not I'll just have to be careful with it. Hopefully the store won't give me any trouble, the reports of people having theirs replaced without complaint are reassuring. I guess I'll show them my wrist rest that's (again) gotten very dirty, but I'm assuming they'll just say it's dirty hands. We'll see.

Fairly recently - interesting. Does anyone with an August or September MBP have this problem?

Got mine in August. No issues here.

Edit: Wait a sec! Is this a sign of a melting power adapter?

ghall, I don't think that's a sign of the melted, but it probably means you've been pulling it out with the cord or wrapping it weird or something. I dunno if it's a problem, mine did that long before it messed up.

And just to let ya'll know, I got my replacement power cord today, no problems at all, and it's working beautifully.

I really hope they've resolved this issue. I'm about to buy an MBP to replace my 12" PB, and then remembered I'd need an extra power adapter. On looking at the product page on the Apple store, I saw many many disturbing reports of what you guys are talking about. If there's a risk of fire etc, Apple could be facing some major lawsuits.

Took a look at mine. You can see by the design this would be an issue. I suspect that within a short time, mine will also split. I see either a recall, class action law suit or something more serious if this results in property damage due to fire. They need to move on this one.

In the mean time, being a good Canadian boy and Red Green fan, I grabbed some white "Duck" tape and rapped it around that troublesome end bit. Might help prevent it from coming apart.

i wonder if a little shrink wrap (if you could fit it on there) would help at all.
