I feel quite comfortable in knowing if I have a problem with this RAM I got from Apple that I will be able to easily get it replaced. The store is 2 miles from my home and so it is convenient. As I said before, they charged me $200 total and gave me my old RAM back which I am selling on ebay. The reserve was met the first day so it looks as if I will get right at $45 to $50 dollars for it. So for right at $150 I for RAM from a company I trust at what I believe to be a fair price. Not having to wait for it to arrive in the mail or having to deal with an online type store was a bonus.

You can dress it up anyway you like, but you were ripped off. I love Apple as a company and technology leader, but the fact is that their RAM prices are unconscionable. First of all, any quality RAM is unlikely to "break." I've never had a single problem with any RAM I've purchased from Crucial over ten years. Had you paid a normal price for the four gigs from another company that you can also trust (and trust not to rip you off), you could buy ANOTHER four gigs if you had a "problem" and you'd be no worse off. Finally, if you paid a normal price, which is around $100, you'd still be able to sell your original RAM on ebay, and your net cost would have been even lower. Instead of trying to convince yourself (because you're not convincing us) that you got a great deal on Apple RAM and that it's somehow special RAM you're better off acknowledging that you made a costly mistake and learn from it.

Is that the royal "us" you're using there? :p

I think he paid a lot more than I did (or would have) but really it's only a "costly mistake" if he feels as if he spent too much on it himself. Ease up a notch, dude. ;)

Sort of like 'you can't rape the willing?'

Why does he so vehemently want to grill the guy about being raped at all is what I was wondering. Common sense tells one that there are far better deals on RAM out there than Apple's but if the guy is happy with his purchase more power to him. There's no reason to be on here berating him for making a "costly mistake" when he clearly doesn't feel like he made one at all.

Caveat emptor. ;)

True. I didn't mean to berate the guy -- I guess if he had paid $500 for the RAM he could have convinced himself to be happy with that too. But I also wanted to make clear to some newbie reading this thread that there really is no credence to his claim that he got his money's worth.

I find that rply rather funny

I could be disappointed in my choice on where to buy the RAM based on your reply, however I have to chuckle a bit. You see, I work providing tech support on PCs and have now for about twenty years. I admit I am real new to the MAc. I always used Windows based PCs until about 4 months ago. My curiosity and my desire for a challenge inspired me to buy a Mac and I actually bought the 24" iMac and a Macbook as well. I have purchased RAM numerous times online and my experience has shown that you can infact get ripped off from the suppliers, I know because it has happened a few times in the past few years. I am not even sure you actually read what I said in my original post. You talk as if you are thinking I paid a terrible price such as what Apple usually charges for memory. I actually believe $200 bucks was a decent price based on the fact that I know the Apple sales rep as a person I can get support from practically anytime just dropping in the store. He saved me the trouble of going through any ordering process and I did not pay any shipping. I was able to sell the memory we took out on ebay and as it stands I have now got $145 in the memory.
Okay, let me say this. If what I paid was a horrible price and I got ripped off monetarily then so be it. Something in the tone of your reply tells me you are rather unhappy with Apple much the way I hear some people express their displeasure with Bill Gates. I know Apple charges a whole lot for their product/s up front compared to a PC. But I knew that when I made the purchase. I will always look for a good deal on most anything. But just so you know, what you and I see as a good deal are not going to be the same. I have had to pay threefold in the past trying to get such a "good deal". If you were trying to make me feel bad pointing out how I was somehow trying to fool others here in the forum, you did not succeed. If you meant to give me an education , thanks for trying to help. I will just say this, I bet there are a bunch of people out here who could share some horror stories about their experiences buying online. I am glad your purchasing experiences have been otherwise.

I think YOU didn't read what I read. I'm extremely happy with Apple. I love my new Imac (I'm brand new to Apple) and I love the way Apple designs its hardware and software. I think Apple Macs are well worth the added expense. It's just that any basic research (except reading your posts) will reveal that their RAM prices -- RAM, btw, that is manufactures in Korea -- are exorbitant. And I'm not saying that always buying "online" is better. It's like any other buying decision -- you shop around and buy a good quality product from a good vendor. Yes, if you look to buy the cheapest crap on the web you'll get crap, but that doesn't mean that the only way to avoid that is to pay Apple's inflated prices.

Alright, we win, you and me

MR, thanks for your feedback. I kn ow what you have said about there being good RAM with better prices than what Apple charges is available at online stores. I know if I was willing to wait and trust the online company, I could have got some Crucial RAM for a better price than what I paid by shopping locally here in Billings at the Apple Store. I am sure there are others who will be patient and be happy to buy online and better yet, even have no problem with the RAM for the duration of their ownership.
I would almost certainly make the same choice I already made if I were to do it again. Strange huh. But that is me. I believe the choice you made was right for you. So you did good. Thanks again for trying to help.

You're quite welcome. Just trying to save you some money. By the way, I'm not sure what you mean by having to be "patient." Crucial generally ships the RAM free by Fedex and it arrives in a couple of days, so unless you're needing an "emergency" RAM upgrade it's quite convenient. In any event it's good that you'll continue to buy RAM from Apple -- the largess of customers like you is good for Apple's bottom line and that's good for the rest of us. :)

I received and installed my pair of samsung 2gb chips yesterday. All is working well and I'm very happy with the upgrade. Photoshop Elements 6 is much faster than my pc version. Took less than 5 minutes to install the chips. This was a no brainer. Cheers.
