Only 512 Megs folks--that might be enough in the year 2000, but not today. So don't expect them to add multitasking to this generation.

The Nexus One only has 512MB of system memory and it multitasks.

That's not to say that I expect Apple to add multitasking. I couldn't care less if they do. But your premise is flawed.

Come on man, don't tell me your falling for the old "bigger is better" trick. Current iPhone 3GS multitasks fine and it has what, 256mb?

Maybe you could explain why 512mb isn't sufficient for multitasking?

Are you sure?!

Mulitasking works fine on my 2nd gen iPod Touch... works great actually! Mind you, it's JB with Backgrounder/ProSwitcher and it works as it should.

I have a feeling iPhone OS 4 will have some surprises ;)

Exactly. A device with 128MB of RAM can handle multitasking no problem. The 512MB in the iPad should multitask flawlessly. I'm just hoping there will be little panels or something of the sort so I can IM while on the web (such as the ones found on Gmail with tasks or Chrome OS).

I noticed that everybody compares iPad to iPhone (browsing speed/experience, games, performance etc.). Why is that? The thing is a computer, not a phone. It's closer in size to computers (bigger than some netbooks actually). Could you compare performance to, say, MacBook?

Your wish is my command.

Maybe because the iPad is an evolution of the iPhone, and compare with a MacBook is completly off.

Maybe with future generation you may check how close in performance is getting compared to a Computer, but now?

Windows 7 and Mac OS X both really want 4GB RAM. But iPhone OS is fine with 128MB, though occasionally you'll get an app crashing to desktop because of low memory. The 3GS has 256MB, which gives room for quite a few iPhone apps. Supposedly, the iPad has 512MB, which is enough for tons of apps.

...however, that doesn't mean they wouldn't get any slowdown or wouldn't become unstable...

Open the iPod application and play a song. Now close it and open Safari.

OH MY GOD IT'S MULTITASKING!

Geez, the original iPhone did such limited multitasking. That much RAM is plenty. Notice how the apps you're running are much smaller than desktop apps. Computers in the mid-1990s did multitasking, and they didn't have a 1 Ghz CPU or 512MB of RAM.

It should handle multitasking fine, I'm interested in how they're going to preserve battery life issues though...

The iPad testing in that link says it's 2x as fast as the 3GS. The A4 seems to be the main reason why it's so fast. The iPad should be able to handle multitasking fine considering background apps don't really use up the memory or processor when idle in the background.

Look up the definition of computer. The iphone is a computer, so is a PS3, so is a Xbox.

So, when someone asks about the model of your computer do you list all this crap? Then do not forget video and still cameras, TVs, printers, scanners etc. They all have "computers" in them.
