[Merged] iPhone - White vs. Black (2010 / iPhone 4 Edition)

Buying one of each--that way, the wife and I can tell our phones apart more easily, and we can swap (the phones, you perv!) every now and again for something different.
 
Black for a few reasons:

  • Glossy black looks expensive
  • Can't see the proximity sensor on a black screen
  • All Apple products are now black/metal
  • Screen bezels should be black in order not to distract

Finger prints is the only downside, but it has that oil resistant coating that the 3GS has, so shouldn't be too bad.

You will definitely be able to get a black one, but whether an Apple store will swap it on the spot I am unsure as it would be open already, and I seem to remember that Apple's return/ refund policies says that the product has to be returned to the original place of purchase (so send back to Apple if bought online). I think it's most likely that you might have to pay the 10% restocking fee - ring Apple care, they are very understanding.

As for this unnecessarily hard decision on choosing the colour, I was very much sat on the fence, swaying back and fourth between the two. I've had a white 3G and white 3GS since the original iPhone and loved them both. Fingerprints really weren't an issue and scratches never showed at all (the only ones I saw were on that darn chrome Apple logo- which, I'm hoping is now UNDER the glass layer on iPhone 4?).

I love the look of the white front, but I much prefer the contrasting black and stainless Steel sides of the black, and have never had a black backed iPhone before, so open to change. However, the hands on photo's of the black made me seriously reconsider when seeing those fingerprints, and quite a few friends with black iPhone's said go white. I think the black is super sleek and stylish, BUT maybe only when it comes out of the box. Once covered in fingerprints and smudges it won't look so classy. I find myself every day thinking how classy my iPad looks and thirty minutes later it feels a mess and I'm constantly cleaning it! As for colour, those who think "it's too feminine" is a reason you won't consider the white iPhone, I think you must be really insecure! It's a colour, and nobody will think you're a girl if you have a white phone!

After the hundreds of hands on videos with the white, I was almost sold, but I was waiting for a hands on video of the black, and finally found one, which has almost certainly made my mind up. Black looks great in the pictures, but on the video I felt it was boring (white is a refreshing change!) and too much like the 3GS, as well as the fingerprints being a pain. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbHgcUJkYjY

I see what people mean about the white bezel being a distraction, but i find my white iMac to be great, and strangely. I also think everything looks nicer on screen with the white around. I was set on white then got confused. I knew a video of the 2 options would help me decide. The videos posted from 9to5 helped make my decision. The white is beautiful. The black looks too similar to current design from the front. Also I like that the white won't show fingerprints.

I'd say if you are truly not sure of the color don't open the box. Do your pre order to guarantee your phone then go to the store to see them in person. I know that's easier said then done!

Edit: I'm still half asleep, just saw you want to pick up at store. For sure they would let you switch. I'd imagine only if they have the other color in stock when u pick up.
 
This si why I'm glad my fiancé didn't upgrade her 3g last year. Now I'll be getting her a white 4 and I'll get a black 4. That way we can switch them around if we want.

The white phone with the black apple bumper looks pretty sick as well.
 
White is really a beautiful device. It also screams "I have an iPhone.". I am trying to imagine myself using this on a day to day basis. Do I want people to say, "Oooh. Nice iPhone" or, would it be better to remain more discreet? With a case on a black one, most wouldn't know it was the 4.

Anyway, judging from the responses in this thread, the stores are sure to run out of the white ones first. If you do not pre-order or arrive early enough, just be prepared to have the decision be made for you.
 
I think we are going to see a lot more white now that they are offered at the base size rather then the bigger size. And in turn I think it's going to lean more toward the female market. My two cents.

How can you disagree that some people want white back/black front? I just said in post #179 that I want a white back/black front. Am I not a person? I even posted a mock up of what it would look like. Funny enough I named the file "oreo_iphone4.jpg", but I don't really think it look like an oreo.

I laugh everytime I hear someone say this as I don't consider white girly at all.

Just curious what the masses think.

yea true. I agree. I like how white looks. but well I like how black looks better it fits better with suits... I mean I whip out a black iphone in business meeting no one really knows.. now i whip out a white one and i should have just told the CEO to go **** himself instead would have gotten me fired faster.. lol

But in all seriousness, I love the white, both my 3G and 3GS were white, and I'm back for another go at iPhone 4. Whenever I had the choice between white and black iPods I also always chose white (except for the U2 one, which there was no choice for).

They're saying they don't like the looks of black front/white back.
 
I thought the first one was because, as most people did, I made a connection between the mass number of women carrying a white one around.

This new one just looks....attractive. It was ugly as sin before.
 
No, it isn't. I'm sorry, but I am a man and I love ALL my cars to be white with very dark tint. The whole white look is clean.

*looks for my fat ipod from 2008 in my draw* Can't believe i ever owned it. I never really liked the 3gs white. but 4 I love. preference I guess
 
I'm going for the 16gb White Iphone. I'm sick of black and I like how there is now white on the front. And as the other poster said it looks really nice especially with the black bumper case which will match my macbook and black keyboard perfectly!
 
The white one is nice and it will be better for putting bumpers on. :D

Only way to make it girly is to put the pink bumper on it.

The visual effect of bumpers will be better on the white one.


Grrrrr sitting in Norway and have to wait until July to get one......

That's what lots of people tend to think, but it all comes down to personal preference. I know a few guys who have and like the white version of the 3GS, and I'm sure it'll be no different with the iPhone 4 (unless, of course, they can't stand the white on the front of the phone).
