I'm looking to upgrade my Mac Pro 5,1 (actually a 4,1) processor - is the W3690 still the best Xeon CPU I can upgrade to? Or have newer series chips been out since that are within the same price range?
I have single 2.93 GHz CPU currently - 8 GB of RAM, planning on upgrading to the faster RAM too. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yes that is pretty much as far as you can go. There will not be new chips for that chipset/socket.
The only thing you could do later down the road to further increase CPU performance is buying a dual CPU board...
Hope that helps...
I received my W3690 form IT Creations (ebay) a couple of days ago, waiting on thermal paste and an allen wrench, can't wait to run Geekbench and transcode a Blu-ray movie.
