I have a 6s Plus and was running the first public beta since it came out. I updated to the newest release yesterday. All was fine for the afternoon, but then last night I opened messages and the app froze and then crashed. I opened it again and same thing, froze right away then crashed.

I tried everything to fix it. Powered off and on, hard reboot, opened messages from Contacts rather than the shortcut, had someone send me a text to see if I could read it, eventually even reset the phone. Nothing worked. Messages remained completely unusable. After a few hours I gave up and went back to 9.3.3.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I've experienced repeated crashing when accessing certain conversations in messages but I've always been able to rectify it with a reboot or accessing the conversation a different way through 3D touch for example. Never had it as severe as your experience though. I haven't experienced this on the second public beta yet but I've only had it since yesterday. If I do I'll be sure to report it.

I also have a 6s plus so it'll be interesting to see if anyone with a different phone has experienced this.

There was a post on reddit from a 6s Plus user who experienced the same as me.

I also tried the 3d touch thing. It opened the app fine, but then froze and crashed.

I am still tempted to reinstall the beta and see if it happens again, but I am traveling for work today and tomorrow and really don't want to have to restore my phone while on the road.

Thanks for the input.

No, you didn't.

A Reset All Settings would have taken care of it.
And if that didn't, a clean install from the full install image, plus restore from backup, would have.

There was no need to go back to iOS 9.

Actually, I did do a Reset All Settings. It didn't do a thing to help it. What I would be interested in finding is a way to fix it without having to do a restore, whether back to 9 or a clean install of 10.

There is no reason NOT to, backup to iTunes (full, encrypted back up), clean install of iOS 10 beta 3, and then restore from the iTunes backup.

You'll lose nothing, and have a clean install. Messages should then behave normally for you like it does for everyone else. If it still does not at that point, then you know there is an issue with your backup.

I am more than happy to go do a clean install of 10 when I know I will have time to deal with the restore. But, as I mentioned before, I have some travel in the next couple of days and didn't want to risk having to do a restore during this time.

If I had some indication that this was a fluke, and that it wouldn't happen again after a restore, I would do it now. But without knowing that, I prefer to go back to 9 until I am better suited to deal with the trials of a major bug on my phone, after my trip is done.

Happens to me from time to time, but not continuous. Not nearly as bad as you're describing above. I also noticed specific crashes when using the doodle application and the camera app inside of iMessage.

any solutions on it? Began to happen today to me soft reset and settings reset didn't help. Can confirm that it doesn't happen with every message thread, just the ones with pictures or group convos. Hope something can be done to rectifyy, really dont want to downgrade to ios 9.

problem just fixed itself, as someone above mentioned. so, i dont know what happened, hopefully it wont happen again. It was rather weird and inefficient as i wasn't able to reply to messages on the phone and had to use my watch. Was altogether about 3-4 hours.

Not had any trouble with messages, most of mine are long threads and include pictures. Currently have a group message going with like 10 people and we've shared several pictures and I've not have a problem running beta 3 on iPhone 6s+.

Just one data point here. 64GB 6S+. The bet is working great for me. A little laggy at times, occasional crash. But otherwise fine.

I had the same issue with few threads in Messages, got the problem solved by changing the text size in settings. For some reason certain threads (long and including lots of pictures etc) won't open anymore if the text size is the smallest.

I did try to reset all settings (helped until I changed the text size back to smallest) and also restore with iTunes and the problem stays.

Hopefully this will be fixed in the next beta.

Edit: 6S with PB2

There's quite clearly a serious Messages bug that is impacting some users. With this taken into account, going back to iOS 9 until the issue is resolved in a future build isn't a horrible idea.

Don't forget, iOS 10 is still a somewhat early Beta. Don't chastise people for reverting back to stable software.

Happened to me this afternoon too, suddenly message app start crashing, couldn't read new message, reply etc.

reset all setting, changing font, hard rest nothing fixed, waited for few hrs and had to go back to 9.3.3 and lost 1 month of data ( well that's what i was prepared for running the beta).

seems to be only effecting 6s and 6s Plus ( dev beta 3).

I had that happen to me for my wife's conversation all of a sudden. I ended up just replying via the rich notifications and after a while of chatting i was able to get back in with it not crashing. Must have been a strange thing in one of the messages... 6 Plus here.

I too was just suffering from this bug. Not restricted to a 6s because I use a regular 6. The messages app lagged and when trying to open some conversations crashed repeatedly. Hard reset did not fix it.

Someone mentioned changing their font size to a larger one fixed it. I was running the default font size and actually moved the slider to a smaller one and Success! Changing the font size seems to have fixed the issue.
