I've found that simply deleting that string and creating a new message solves the problem.
I can't even do THAT. And it only just started today. Been fine for me ever since the first public beta and now allllll of a sudden it will let me see texts as they come in but I can't reply to them, can't open any of the conversation strings, nothing. So frustrating!!!

Fixed my wife's phone by performing a full backup to iTunes. Then we told the phone to perform a full erase and reset.
Once it finished this we restored the backup and she can not open and use iMessage normally again.

Similarly, I had to restore to 9.3, restore from back up, then download the beta again. Because I thought my most recent backup might have whatever cooties that made Messages not work, I restored to a backup from earlier this month. Lost a lot of stuff.

Out of the blue is happening on my iPad Air 2 this morning. Yesterday I had it crash when tapping a particular thread, but a soft reset fixed it, and I was fine. So this morning all of a sudden the app just won't open. It was displaying blank with no text or anything, I soft reset again and have tried changing text size, sending myself messsages via Siri, and restarting and soft resetting, but nothing has worked. Only the left pane and text and some pictures of contacts show. Anyone have a fix ? Hoping for a new beta on Monday...

Nothing I tried short of a restore and fresh install of the current beta fixed it. I tried everything you listed here (short of messages via Siri) and nothing worked.

Hoping for a beta on Monday to fix this. Really a major bug. If no beta on Monday or Tuesday I'll probably wipe than restore from backup.

Well...it's randomly working again here on my iPad Air 2. Totally working now, went away just as randomly as it appeared. What a weird bug, just glad it's gone.

I've been experiencing the same issue since around noon on Friday. At first I could pull down my notification center to at least be able to read what the text said and then could reply via Facebook messenger. Can't even see them in their anymore. I've just basically restored to Facebook messenger app and WhatsApp to text people at this point.

+1 to not even being able to open iMessage on 6+. Been running ios10 beta since developer beta 1. Randomly started. Problem not fixed by any of the above described steps. Will wait it out for next beta release.

Can anyone confirm if this is fixed on Beta 4 eg if app was crashing on beta 3 and won't fix by soft rest etc and beta 4 fixed it.
I would love to upgrade again but don't want same issue again.

I had this on beta 3 (fixed it by sending a picture in Messages using the Photos app - I'm not sure why this worked, but it sort of forced it to load the conversation threads and stopped the main app crashing). So far on beta 4, no issues.
