I think Apples plans with the iPad Pro’s have been delayed by several factors, look at it this way the general iPad life spans before a new release is about 18 months roughly.
Now I think towards the middle of 2019 Apple was likely planning to release a MiniLED iPad Pro alongside the new iPad Airs which are likely coming next week. (About 2 year lifespan of 2018 model)
However, I think that there was delays with the miniLED meaning the new iPP wouldn’t have been ready in time for a late 2020 launch with the upcoming airs, pushing them into early 2021 which would have meant almost 2.5 years of an upgrade cycle.
This is the point where the 2020 iPad was born (a very minor spec bump) just to keep investors/consumers happy and keep the money rolling in. (Released roughly 18 months after 2018 model)
Then COVID happened, which I think is going to delay the miniLED iPad even further into 2021, so I would not be surprised if the miniLED iPad doesn’t get announced until mid 2021 now, that is IF we don’t have more manufacturing delays through this winter (which is quite likely), meaning a late 2021 launch is fairly possible now at this point (which in some respects is the ideal 18 month refresh cycle since the 2020 model).
The iPad Pro 2020 with its minor upgrades was released as a way for Apple to buy some time for themselves.
