You can either just buy the microcell and then it will still use your normal monthly minutes, or you can buy the microcell and get an unlimited monthly plan that would allow you to get unlimited minutes when connected to the microcell. This would work out well for people who work from home, or if someone has a home phone, they could get rid of it and only pay $20 for unlimited minutes through their microcell. It also seems that you get a $100 MIR if you sign up for the plan, making the microcell only $50.

Went to my local Saint Louis (south county) ATT store today. Although I kind of already knew the answer, I asked them if they knew what the 3G Microcell was. They had no clue what I was talking about. Looks like Saint Louis is not an early launch city. :-(

just Tried to check on Microcell in Detroit

called my local AT&T store guy that answered sounded confused or unsure before I could say anything he asked me to hod right to hold I hung up after 10+ minutes you think they know at least a little lol. oh well I will wait a day or two and try again unless somebody in my area has better luck!

ATT has been pretty quiet on their 3G microcell. There has been no official anouncement of the product other than it is coming out this year. Employees will need to be trained on the product so that they understand it.

I am just hoping that either I can pickup an early launch unit, or to the very least ATT announces when the national launch is next week.

Has info on the Microcell appeared on any of the local AT&T websites yet?

Read through those documents a couple of times. I am glad that they let you hook up the microcell in "priority mode". I would hate to lose a call or not get a call because I am streaming/downloading some huge file.

i need this! ATT reception is no where to be found at my house (currently on tmobile, but will switch to ATT for this)

any word on price point? im guessing it iwll be like 200?

both

AND, if you have both landline and internet from AT&T it should be FREE.

How much were the devices again, 99$? I would buy that for a dollar.

Very interesting post on Microcell unlimited plan pricing.

Looks like the 20 bucks is confirmed...BUT...it is only 10 if you have an ATT land line or high speed internet.

http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/20/atandts-3g-microcell-does-unlimited-calling-but-it-aint-cheap/

lol why would someone want unlimited minutes on their cell phone at home, and unlimited minutes on a land line. $20 is still a little pricey imo, considering you are helping att both pick up for their lack of coverage, and take a load off of their network.

the thing should be $49.99 w/o the unlimited plan, and FREE with the unlimited plan, which should only cost $9.99 /mo imo....

For those of you who are thinking about telling a friend in the early launch areas to pick one up for you...here is an interesting quote on the activation website.

"Device may not function except in specific counties in the Raleigh NC, Charlotte NC, Columbia SC, and Atlanta GA metropolitan areas in a phased network roll-out. AT&T reserves the right to restrict national network deployment."

Looks like we will have to wait for the national rollout to activate/use one of these if you are outside of the test launch areas.

This is my favorite part...

Question:
Do I need to subscribe to an AT&T Unlimited MicroCell Calling feature?
Answer:
While highly recommended for maximum benefit, a subscription to AT&T Unlimited MicroCell Calling is not required. Your normal wireless from AT&T minute plan rates will apply.

Since my basement is a bunker this would be perfect, especially since I don't need to pay for service plan. Between my Rollover Minutes and A-List I wont need the extra minutes. So, I'll pay around $150 for the device... I'm down with it.

I will probably go ahead and purchase the Microcell on Friday (I live in the Raleigh, NC area) but you know it really bugs me that I have to pay AT&T extra because of their shoddy service in my area. When I had Sprint I never had any problems making calls in my house. In fact I never had any problems making Sprint calls anywhere. The only way I can really justify spending this extra money is that it is just the cost of my keeping my iPhone. Both my wife and I love our iPhones and just can't imagine using any other phone. So it's either not be able to use our iPhones in our homes or buy the Microcell.

One thing I'm wondering. It is my understanding the unit will cost $150 but if you pay $20 extra for unlimited calls you will get a $100 MIR. I wonder after some period of time if you can switch back from unlimited to a regular calling plan? Also, I wonder if you can return the unit if you get it home and find that it really doesn't improve your call service any.

Well you only technically have to pay for the actual microcell unit. It costs $150, and then you can use your normal monthly allotment of minutes from ATT for free. The unlimited plan is more for people who would want to use one of these for their home office/business or would rather replace their home phone with an unlimited option for their cell phone. I wouldn't suggest paying for the unlimited plan unless you either would use a ton of minutes at home, or are buying the microcell to get rid of your landline, and even then it's still questionable if an additional $20 /mo is worth it.

Lastly, the MIR will likely be on some type of contract, so you have to agree to the unlimited plan for 12 or 24 mos. and they will give you the rebate, but I could be wrong. If you have to sign any type of contract though for the MIR, I would advise against it. I think it would suck to be locked into a microcell contract for 24 months, because ATT might finally upgrade their network and you might get service at your house in 6 months, so you will have to waste money to keep the microcell.

I spoke with a rep in the Apex, NC AT&T store (he sounded pretty knowledgeable). He said AT&T has delayed the Raleigh rollout until next Monday. It looks like Charlotte started their rollout today.

Atlanta Rollout Delayed too...

The Atlanta area zip codes don't work on the AT&T site so I spoke to 3 different ATL stores this morning. Atlanta is not part of the initial rollout either even though all the blogs said it would be. All I got from the stores was "I don't know" or "Should be soon" :(

Hum, interesting. I've been to that same store and they seem to usually know what they are talking about. Thanks for the update.

i have a sprint phone as well as a 3GS and there are so many holes in their coverage it's like swiss cheese

Quick update, picked up the microcell today and registered/installed with no issues and is working beautifully
I now get 5 full bars throughtout house and tested up in 3rd floor bonus room and works to a tee
Cost was $150, I opted to not get the MIR since I have plenty of minutes and after 5 months the difference would cost me more $$
Waited a long time and hope everyone soon can be satisfied like I finally am, almost surreal to finally have service after having little to none for so long at my home

Does subscribing with the $20 plan include a contract?
