I swear MicroLED is the fusion energy of the display world. Beyond a few demonstrations, mass market release is ALWAYS just a few years away.

I've been hearing about it for over 10 years now.
It really seems that way. I found rumors on this site as far back as July 2016 saying that MicroLED could be in Apple Watches starting in 2017 (Series 3).

When I was looking at buying my first Apple Watch, a Series 4, there were plenty of people saying to hold off, because the MicroLED Series 5 (and definitely by Series 6) was just around the corner. And unicorns and leprechauns will travel in your wake, and everyone everywhere will just get along.

They generally do annual updates even if they are small. This is not for people who bought last year’s model. It’s to entice people who haven’t bought one, yet. Most people don’t buy every new version that comes out either for watch, phone, MacBook, etc. They buy one and wait a couple of years or longer to upgrade again.

You’re 100% correct. I could have sworn that when it shipped I read they weren’t going to updating it with just a spec bump on a yearly basis, which I thought was pretty un-Apple like, but for whatever reason that was my assumption so I figured they were treating it like the AirPods, HomePods or the Mac Pro line without a yearly release but that can hurt sales too. I’m holding off on a pair of AirPods Pro 2 at the moment knowing we’ll probably get AirPods Pro 3 next year.

still wearing the S6 for the near future, unless a new must have sensor in S9/S10 I don't see the point of upgrading until microLED.
Smamd here. The only thing I think that would tempt me before that point is if they finally introduce optical glucometry, but I think that’s still a ways away

I am really hoping for a new Ultra this fall and if so, I will upgrade from my Series 7. But if it is not updated for another year, then I will wait. I know the current Ultra is a great Watch, but I can’t bring myself to upgrade until at least a refreshed version comes out.

Give me Watch rumors for S9 this year!!!!!!!. No rumors mean no updates?. We even have iPhone 17-18 rumors (finger print reader) but nothing on S9?!. Suspiciously boring “release” this year. At least a price cut, no?

The Apple Watch ultra has a fantastically bright screen and contrast ratio is good. Battery life is excellent. Not sure I need a faster refresh rate on a watch either, or a faster processor - it’s a watch after all. Given what it cost and how much I love it, I won’t be upgrading for some years it’s great at it is. Unless of course as an earlier poster has said there is a killer new feature/sensor.

Would be nice if they could make one a little smaller and lighter with the same features, this might help with that.

Apple acquired LuxVue Technology on May 2, 2014, one year before the Apple Watch debuted on April 24, 2015. And on the very day LuxVue Technology was acquired by Apple there were people on MacRumors speculating about its use in an upcoming "iWatch".

Yes, but I think we are talking about significantly smaller screens. This would be potential iWatch tech. Doubtful it is for the iPhone.

I’m hoping that they finally give us a new SOC on a smaller process. Hoping for 3nm but I’d take 5nm. The current SOC is a slight variation on the same 7nm S4 SOC that came out in the Series 4. I’d love a SOC with more efficient cores and a longer battery life.

Just to be clear, I don’t expect it this year. Best not to get our hopes up.

Ah, well there you go even further back than I found.

With LuxVue, Apple gains a well-funded maker of display technology that could benefit advancements in battery life or possibly screens for new Apple device categories like the rumored "iWatch" wearable. The startup, founded in 2009, had accumulated $43.8 million in venture capital funding primarily from ID Ventures America and Kleiner Perkins.

Beyond that, information about LuxVue is scarce, though the company holds numerous micro LED patents and its tech has been described by Kleiner Perkins partner John Doerr as "a technical breakthrough in displays."

Just solve it like you always did. Add a premium of 3K. People will buy it, cause it is Apple.
Can’t wait for Apple to announce $3k starting price for iPhone 15 Ultra (or Pro Max, however they call the top iPhone).
Let’s see how the sales go.

So is Apple still shipping a refreshed version of the Apple Watch Ultra this year as has been reported by some recently or will Apple wait until the new display technology is ready before it ships the next Ultra? I can see them delivering a spec bump each year to justify the price but can’t think of anything other than some kind of new sensor or the new display technology that would get somebody who just dropped $700+ on one to do it again so soon.
Yup. We just have to wait and see. I like the AW Ultra 5x as much as previous AW versions but I certainly do not see any likely improvements that would get me to upgrade from the v1 Ultra.
Edit: Doubling battery life might do it for me as long as brightness does not decrease.

There's always room for improvement and I think this technology will be similar to the moment we all saw the iPhone 4's retina display for the first time. Once you see it there's no going back.

In particular, above all the improvements to color and efficiency, I think the "painted on glass" effect (if true) is what will be most noticeable. It's a watch after all so if they can produce an effect that somehow makes the screen look like it's *not* a screen per se then I think we're in for a real treat. I can't wait for microLED tech, especially when it comes to iPhone, iPad, and MacBook.

Getting increasingly excited about the Apple watch ultra - get the batt life to 7 days / 30 hours with dual band GPS and native topo maps and I'll bite!

I’d suggest waiting for NanoLED.

Even though NanoLED is the best display technology currently available, unfortunately scaling it down has been at issue with anything smaller that 85" a problem to manufacture / making price competitive. Once they solved this issue, it's going to make current TV's and Monitor's pale in comparison: better black / white contrast than OLEDs, no burn in, no organic decay, and even slimmer and less complicated technology to manufacture, which should result in lower prices.

since when did macrumor be came vampires ? A vary early morning read

They're not. They're probably OLD(er) people who operate on a different set of time rules.

Up at 5AM whether the alarm goes off or not. Even on days off, or after a long vacation. I'm up at 5AM or 5:30 at the latest. My wife usually makes it until 0600, but by then the smell of coffee wakes her up.

I'll throw in a funny line and say Old Country Buffet for dinner by 3, and home by 6, in bed by 7.

In reality, we usually eat a little later (around 6 or 7 PM), but we ARE in bed by 10PM every night, after falling asleep on the couch watching TV.

So you're saying I shouldn't wait to upgrade my Series 4 for the Apple Watch Ultra 4 because the specs suck so I should wait for the Apple Watch Ultra 5? Or I should just get the Apple Watch Ultra 2 this year? Or will it be called the Apple Watch Ultra Series 1?

Upgrade whichever you like. That screen change ain’t gonna shatter everything else.
