For what it’s worth, my kids school has Microsoft licenses for each student, and they can log into and use MS apps from multiple devices, including iPads and Macs at home. That’s what we‘ve been doing for the last few years. No need to buy our own license. I think this is a pretty common setup with schools these days.
In my area, its Google suite. Probably a mix between the two.

There are legit and legal sites that sell very cheap OEM license keys for fairly recent Microsoft Office Suites and dirt cheap license keys for Windows 10/11 (if you need to run those). I can't imagine most people needing any new 'features' that Microsoft has added to Office over the last couple of years. In fact, I personally find older versions of Office faster and easier to use, but I am not a power user. Also, I can't speak of Microsoft Office without saying how much I loathe the new Outlook and I know I am not alone.

probably one of the best subscriptions I pay for a program with such capabilities. 80 usd per year for 5 users. Each user has an additional 1 TB per year in onedrive
Same here... 50/60 EUR if you keep an eye on some promotions or special deals...

I have access to the €3 subscription of 365 so if I bought this I would have to use it for 50 months of the 60 this suite is gonna be on sale

The prices are what Office pricing has always been. The current prices were the same nine years ago for Office 2016, so considering inflation it’s actually cheaper now. And if you only need it on a single device, it’s also significantly cheaper than the subscription over five years.
Bear in mind the prices for subscription we were talking about aren't for one users, but for five users... check, a single user is cheaper.

Really? Not what I heard of. As I said I don't really care as last time I used their products was around Office 95.
If they always kept having a non subscription version, that's good for those who buy them.
Microsoft has offered non-subscription licenses for Office 2011, 2016, 2019, 2021, and now 2024. It's not new.

There's no mention of the price, and from what I can see, it's not yet in the App Store.

I also wonder why they consider 365 to be the preferred version, yet in this version Excel performs faster.

I'm totally fine with it not having updates, but wonder if will at least get bug fixes and changes needed to remain compatible with future MacOS versions. If not, then I wonder when it will no longer work.
$149.00 USD

Depends on what you are doing. If you are an advanced business user, Office. I would prefer the simplicity of Pages for home use.
I would love to maintain everything within the Apple ecosystem, but unfortunately, Pages lacks a decent dark mode to work with. Moreover, I am too old to switch back to white pages.

Standalone (non-subscription) versions of MS Office never went away even after Office 365 (now MS 365) launched. It was rumored/expected that Office 2021 would be the last standalone version but that turned out not to be the case.

Yes, although the subscription option isn't bad when you consider that it (MS 365 Personal) includes 1 TB cloud storage. You get full versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, ad-free Outlook, use on up to 5 devices simultaneously, etc. and 1 TB cloud storage for around $5.83/month when paid yearly.

$149 USD for the home version, $249 for the business version

Why call it "2024" when we're almost in Q4?! It will look obsolete almost as soon as it launches...

That’s probably by design. Remember they want you on Office 365 for the recurring revenue so it behooves them to only have the current year in their product name for a small amount of time for marketing reasons to make 365 seem newer as fast as possible.

Steve critiquing other companies of no original ideas but apple had the iPod and iTunes music store and stopped at that then copied online music streaming.
Well Steve Jobs died before Apple brought out the online streaming service unless I have my dates wrong. Apple under Steve Jobs never really invented anything original, but what they did was made it easy to use, made it work well, and indeed it all looked good. The rest of the market was a nightmare visually and were much more difficult to use.

I think the subscription is a great deal if you need OneDrive. It's one of the most user-friendly, multiplatform, and cost-efficient cloud services.

Nice to see the suite come back...

I never thought I'd pay MS a subscription fee but 5 friends splitting the $75 is only $15/year for 1tb of storage and the full suite. Pretty good deal

This is the way it should be.

If you want one for one PC with no subscription, pay something reasonable and get it for life.

If you want the latest and greatest for multiple users and cloud capabilities, pay the subscription for something reasonable.

Thank you, Microsoft!

Alternatively you can pick up legit licenses of Office 2021 for less than $40 from several vendors nowadays.
Would appreciate it if you could provide names of vendors and links. I've read several horror stories from people who purchased supposedly “legit” copies and got burned!

So, it'd great to get a couple of confirmed legitimate vendors!

Alternatively, maybe Microsoft still offers the 2021 version for the Mac at a discount…. Don't need what were rumored to be embedded AI features and lots of phoning home & data tracking…

Pages and Numbers work great for my limited needs, and if I need a closer Office app, I use LibreOffice.

Is the Microsoft addiction slowly fading, or are there still die-hards out there?

In all honesty I find Office 365 to be a pretty good deal, especially when you can find on sale regularly on Amazon. I’ve purchased a few 12+3 month licenses for a bit over 50€ for the family subscription. For that price it’s worth for OneDrive alone in my opinion

In 2019, I purchased the 2019 stand-alone version for Mac.

Then, in 2021 I purchased the "new" 2021 stand-alone version for Mac. However, that "new" 2021 version was the exact same version number as the 2019 version. Microsoft simply rebadged the same software. Very sneaky and disappointing.

Fortunately, Microsoft offered an immediate refund when I called them out on it.

So - my advice - be wary that the "new" 2024 version is not simply the 2021 (and 2019!) version that has been rebadged. For anyone that buys the (potentially new, potentially not) 2024 version, please note the current 2019/2021 version is 16.89.1.
365 is currently on that version, so I'd imagine 2024 is the same as 19/21.
