Microsoft launches Windows Phone 7 in U.S. and pretty much nobody shows up

"The Windows Phone 7 US launch today has been marked by very small lineups," Electronista reports. "A handful of reports so far have shown lines of a dozen or fewer people at major stores on the West coast."

"Microsoft has also faced a symbolic loss with one anecdote of the Microsoft Store in Denver having no line at all," Electronista reports. "Microsoft is believed to be spending $500 million in marketing just for the holidays to try and drive early sales."

Electronista notes, "Apple had some of its longest lines to date for the iPhone 4 and, at flagship stores like 5th Avenue in New York City and London's Regent Street, had lines that persisted for several hours after the doors opened with hundreds or thousands in queues."

You can post all of the facts you want, but the truth is, if Steve Jobs said 2+2=5, LTD would defend him and insist we're all wrong and Apple's just better at doing first grade math, and that they're innovative for finding a new way to do it and everyone else are just a bunch of copycats who come up short.

Me personally, I think Windows Phone 7 looks pretty good, and you can't say it's an Apple rip off (well, I guess you can say it, and LTD will say it) because the interface is nothing we've seen on a phone before. I'm not an early adopter of phone OSes, I like to wait for all the kinks to get worked out and for the app ecosystems to grow, but I would definitely consider a Windows 7 phone later on down the road.

technically, amazon hasn't started selling the focus yet. the surround went up sometime last night, and the quantum is up for pre-order. the focus is somewhat missing in action.

i did have a chance to see a focus in person at the at&t store today. while the phone felt smaller than i expected for a 4" display, i couldn't get past how over-saturated the display was. it made the tiles look awful. i'm sadly leaning toward the surround with the weird slide-out speaker.

I've been really keen to pick one up. As a fresh OS it looks magnificent. Some of the Ars reviews/posts have got me really interested.

Wow, that looks like a really good product. I thought the UI wasn't my thing, but looking closely at Ars's review, it looks really good and user friendly.

If you ask me, Apple needs to step up their game now.

Also, it's funny to note that just as in the computer world, it is now Microsoft vs Linux vs Apple.

i dont see why people have to lay the hate on windows phone 7... it's soooo much better than android and I'm happy to see more phones of the iPhone's caliber starting to show up finally.

the multi-touch on the windows phone 7 is very very smooth and the UI is quite nice, though i hope you can disable the transition animations because they take way too long.

Like many other LTD threads, there's little basis on reality.

Like a lot people, including the reviewers, I'm impressed by the phone. when MS stated they were going to redesign their mobile OS, I was a doubting Thomas. I saw how the older legacy wince machines were. With that said, they did their homework, and paid attention to the details and clearly designed a great phone os.

I tried it at the Oak Brook Store. It's great. The only problem is that when you are tied to the iPhone/iPad/Touch eco-system - who wants to buy Apps and protected videos and music all over again?

Indeed they are late to the party and that means they have their work cut out. While many people are fully plugged into the apple ecosystem which may keep them in that ecosystem. Many people are not. I wouldn't give inertia more credit then it deserves. Yeah a number of apple customers will not be swayed by the win7 phone, but there are much more customers out there and given how it seems to be selling, Ms has struck a chord.

The reality is that with Windows 7/Server, Windows Phone, Office 2010 and 2011, and Exchange/Sharepoint/SQL 2010, Microsoft has responded to criticism and improved itself and its products immensely versus what it delivered in the mid-2000s. By and large MS-bashing has gone out of style, even among my most zealous Apple friends.

Hopefully this will lead to more innovations from Apple, who I think got lazy with Mac OS X during the Vista years. I'm hoping for Lion to be a big leap forward in usability.

I think it will take a long time for Microsoft to truly catch up to Apple in the smartphone market, as WinMo 5, 6 and 6.5 all sucked, and I used them all. Once that stigma is removed, and WinPo7 has all the kinks worked out, they may finally be able to join the iPhone/Android race.
