Office 2021 end of support is in October, so this isn’t really a great deal.

To be fair Microsoft Office isn’t really a great deal - full stop…

At least not when they are going to go around bricking functionality on old computers…

But it's a decent deal. It lets you use Office 2021 forever, and on a older Mac that's also finished with support, but that you still want/need to use, current updates don't add much value anyway.

Mac OS 26.5.2 and Office 16.78.3 Retail license and all is still working as expected on Macbook Pro M5. Edit and Save documents with all components. So, confusing I guess as to why it doesn't work for others?

I would agree that this 2019 version was sold to me as a lifetime license so taking back any of it's functionality would be law suit territory.

Lol! Lawsuit territory? And how many thousands of dollars are you willing to spend on a lawsuit over software that's now worth maybe $40? And if Microsoft did not sell it it you, you'd have to find and sue whoever did.

Not forever. Only until the Office 2021 certificates expire. Then it will go read-only just like Office 2019 this year.

As far as I know you just have to upgrade to a newer version of macOS and then update your Office suite. Everything should run normally.

Mine was done through the old home scheme where as an employee of our company we were entitled to a very cheap copy (£10)
That's also how I got my version on my Macbook. Its v16.16.27 (201012). It says "Retail License 2016". So far (touch wood) both versions are operating as per normal. Although I dread to think what will happen if I ever have to re-install Office on the Macbook, as, where would I get the install software from etc.

If by "update your Office suite", you mean "buy a new licence for Office 2024", yes. 🙄 And 2024 wo'nt support older OSes.

I can't see anything in what you've written ("update your Office suite") that explains how to fix this. If you have Office 2019, there is no update with the updated certificate.
I said:

Update or upgrade your macOS first and then your Office suite.

Updating the OS isn't going to fix it either.

If you have Office 2021, then you can still update to a newer version with the revised certificate, and that may require a newer OS version; but there is NOTHING for Office 2019 users.

Unless you can provide some links to something that backs up your claim, it doesn't seem to fit with all the reporting.
