According to the MS site comparing XP to Vista to Win7, it seems that XP is more than sufficient for 99% of my Windows needs. There's still nothing compelling to Win7, unless that were to be my sole OS (which it would never be). Actually, I find it headache-inducing from a user experience perspective, much like the Office 2007 suite. Changing stuff for change's sake is great for marketing, sure, but not necessarily more effective or better at what the prior iteration did. Sorta like the last election. :p

Great for new users, folks that already are "sold" on the Windows experience & all, but from a competitive standpoint, meh. Certainly nothing switch-worthy there that I can find. More like going from a Ford to a Chevy because the Chevy now has a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Still and all, I really hope MS builds on this. Their success makes all users better off, whether they use Windows, MacOS, or Linux.

Just installed it onto a neighbours computer. It's bloody complicated. But, yeah, rock solid, looks good and recognises more than 2 motherboards.

This time Microsoft, you have the edge.

However, I would personally be on Ubuntu if I go back to PC. I like simplicity, not "HEY! LOOK AT ME! IM AERO!"

Complicated? Just about everything on Win 7 is so much more user friendly and intuitive than XP... think about how long it used to take just for someone to connect to a wireless network, much less figure out why a connection or whatever was down in XP

The only real benefit you get from buying a Mac these days is good build quality (but even that is in doubt - see recent iMac releases for an example).

If you buy a Mac, you pay more for less powerful hardware running a less stable operating system.

Mac's are rapidly becoming the red-headed step child of Apple

In xp, Windows were simply windows. Shaking around a window didnt minimise the rest, moving a window didnt make it snap to one side of the screen. The control pannel in windows 7 has about 50 applets, whereas in ubuntu, it has about 10.

I plugged in an ethernet cable in Windows 7 and it asked what sort of network i wanted, Home, Office or Public network. I had not a clue what to click. In Ubuntu and XP, its just a case of plugging the cable in.

And that is why I find it confusing. The GUI is too flashy and attention seeking and the layout is very messy.

Apart from that, Windows 7 is very stable and I was quite impressed.

Windows 7 x64 is pretty great.

I used to spend 95% of my time in OSX and about 5% in Win XP via bootcamp.

Lately it's more like 50/50 between OSX and Windows 7.

Win 7 was a pretty huge improvement whereas i'm still wondering what exactly my $25 bought me with Snow Leopard.

True, but they make for awesome Windows 7 machines.

I've not had much exposure to it yet. But it does feel better.

Mind you I never had any major gripes with Vista either. Nor Win ME.... at least not compared to most people.

I'm not convinced by the new taskbar thingy at the bottom though, I do still like the old windows way of handling things.

But considering the huge user base, it shouldn't come as any great surprise it has done so well for them.
