Yeah the OP's complaints are unjustified, keyboard is optional on any tablet and $199 is just ridiculous, but I do think the RT's were priced VERY wrong. The tablets which should be priced the same as the ipads are the clover trail full windows 8 tablets, and they are priced about the same and they are what will make a dent in the market. RT is junk and MS needed to undercut Apple IMO by at least $49-$99, and that's the 16gb model because in that sense I agree with the OP, the 32gb RT surface should have been $399-$449 (OR include the keyboard for $499), thus undercutting the ipad, I still personally would not have purchased it, but it would have gained some traction there. Personally I'm glad they fubared the RT release, it means RT will die that much sooner and we can move on to the full windows tablets and forget that RT ever existed to confuse consumers and dilute the market.

I still do think the OP has a valid concern about the hard drive space though, I have a windows tablet and was pretty bummed about how much space I had out of the box and I'm a very heavy user who understands how much space windows takes up.

It seems like only a few of you in this thread get it. SpineDoc does apparently even though he says some of my claims are unjustified? Looking at my original post, I stand by it. $199 maybe ridiculously low but when you are a few years late to the tablet market you need to entice customers to take a chance with your new offering. The windows brand isn't as strong as it once was. Yes, the OS and Office footprint is huge on the surface. I think the marketing is very misleading and wrong.

I do not hate MS or the Surface. Microsoft has made me so much money over the years it's not even funny. I wouldn't buy a Surface though and I think Windows 8 isn't the greatest OS MS produced up to this point.

Yes, I think Apple products are better. It's obvious Microsoft tries to copy them. No big deal. Just how I feel.

When computers come with 500+gb hard drives as standard, why should a consumer assume that they would have a lot of free space on a 32gb drive?

So if you bought a 64GB iPod, would you be pissed if you only had 32GB available out the gate for your music? Come on. Be honest with yourself......

Well, I'm not sure if I disagree with you that much on $199, that's specifically for RT, but MS would lose so much money on hardware, marketing, R&D, etc etc that it would be a terrible decision for them to even bother. Lets face it, RT isn't going anywhere, and for MS to push it at $199 doesn't make sense for anyone, but I see your point.

When it comes to the clover trail full windows 8 units though I think consumers will easily see the added value over iOS and an ipad and they will make a substantial dent in the market. RT only serves to take away from the full windows tablets and will only hurt MS.

I think we are all still in this weird limbo where because of the internal management wars at microsoft we are seeing stupid decisions like RT and Metro come out of a company that is able to do better, it will be interesting to see how the next 12 months play out, how RT does, how the market responds to full windows on a tablet, how MS will update and fix windows 8, what the competition will come up with, etc etc. Regardless it's going to be absolutely incredible and competition is a good thing.

Are there any owners that feel they got gouged or swindled due to the fact that you have to spend $100 for the keyboard (which is damn near mandatory for that device) and that if you get the 32GB version then only 16GB of space is truly available? I'd be curious to hear the feedback.

Did Microsoft miss the boat on this by not pricing the tablet $199 to gain a large foot print into the market?

Nope.

1: The keyboard is HARDLY mandatory, I find its virtual keyboard to be even better than the iPads. ( Note Android, Stop sucking with your virtual keyboards. )
2: Well, the 32GB version still has more space than a 16GB iPad, and I can easily expand it with an SD card, which I did. I also get a full operating system.
3: No, this is a premium product, its externally well made, Microsoft would take a massive hit on selling it at 199.

In my opinion, the Surface does not exist to sell in massive numbers, it exists to set the bar for the OEMs, so they don't start selling 99 dollar crap.

I WILL be getting a Surface pro, just because I want it, and I'll keep the RT as well.

But so far, my Surface has been a pretty quick, wonderfully made device with a very innovative OS, good battery life, and all the Apps I need, seriously, the Apps are pouring in like crazy.

The iSheep might not like it, but Windows 8 and Windows RT are here to stay.
