Which versions will eventually be availabe?

I would buy a slimmed down cheap version of Vista, with only the gaming needs activated.

I probably will get a Mac Pro next year, and use Mac OS X for my daily working needs.
But for my daily gaming needs, it's better to run Windows.

I only want to be able to use DirectX 10 features and networking for gaming.
To hell with IE 7.
No Anti Virus protection nedded.
Aero??? R U kidding?? Just give me back the NT 4 interface, and let me put my "shortcuts" of all my games in the Start-menu (which should be renamed to Game-menu).
Gadgets?????? hahahahaha

So seriously, is there going to be a (much) cheaper Vista-gaming version?
I'll buy that for the Mac Pro, I assume. :)

i can't wait... a few months after Vista's release (around 2761 at this rate), forums all over the world will be filled with complaints that they can't get Aero to work, and a month later, that their internet stops working after an hour...

Actually, can MS legally deny someone a service provided by a different company? The user/pirate/idiot will be paying for internet subscription but having it denied by MS whom has nothing to do with it.

You gotta love MS. I like it when they say Vista will be the most secure Windows ever. Its not hard to make it more secure, I mean, it cant get anymore insecure can it? :D Just closing a few ports by default would make it the most secure Windows ever. :p

Ah! But they are not shutting down your service. They are denying that specific computer some of it's capabilities. You can continue to work on your Word document. You can still connect your legit PC to the internet.

I wish they'd concentrate on putting these draconian measures into the versions that pirates mostly pirate, i.e. the foreign language versions, and leave the English version relatively clean. It's going to be a performance pig anyway so it doesn't need services running in the background checking if the installation is legal.

Doesnt it say that internet access would be denied after 30 minutes? That is blocking a service provided by someone else. Which leaves MS open to prosecution from the service provider and the user - although the user wouldnt have a leg to stand on.

I imagine that it will deny access for that one computer, not your entire network. Being able to access the service is a function of the OS. If you have two machines, one running the legit copy and another running the pirate copy, the pirate will cease to work, the legit will continue to function.

Now that I think about it, it really would be effecitve for parents to run pirate copies on a computer for the kids. I'm guessing the WGA is tougher to crack than parental control software.:D

Ok what if you only have one computer? the ISP could possibly prosecute MS because it makes them look like they are providing poor service if the user is naive to there illegal OS situation and so damaging their brand.

I still think that the ISP would still have no case against MS. By using a pirate copy of the software, you are violating the terms of use of the Windows license. Your use of the computer for any purpose is not allowed - their restricting only your net access is not unreasonable. The ISP can't really claim that MS is seeking to damage the brand - they are not directing against specific providers (if using MSN as you ISP [do they still do that?] exempted you from the pirating problems, I think a case would develop).
