Sounds like without these changes it was going to be released in terrible shape and be a huge fiaso. Corporations already forgive MS though by investing their entire business in their technology. This has to be chance for Apple to start taking control of the consumer market. People have more of a choice on which OS to pick when it comes to their own home. Not usually the case for their company continuing to create proprietary MS apps, web services, etc, which in turn leave one with Windows. Anyway, companies are probably not going to even bother till 08 as it will just not be worth the expense. Linux has a tremendous chance as well to try and implement itself in the backend more and more of these companies.

60% is a lot, so if this announcement is after the delay announcement, i dont think they will make it to 2007 ces lol

The release date for M$ Vista just keeps getting pushed backed further, and further, and further, and........ :)

so i know it was pushed back to January, is that still the tentitive release date? or was it pushed back further?

this is beginning to sound like vaporware.

I believe that the current official release date is still in January, but with this announcement.....

I wonder if there is anything else left for them to take out to make it easier for them to meet their release goal of next year.

At this rate and shedding features like a snake sheds its skin, Vista will end up being a new "theme" for XP.

Service pack 3 anyone?

I don't get it. So if they rewrite 60% of the spaghetti code for the consumer version it will only take another month? That isn't possible.

With the power that Microsoft has in the form of money, why can't Microsoft just buy Apple and just rename Tiger as the new Vista. Perhaps include a Classic mode feature to run your old XP software and games.

Or they can just work on Service Pack 3 for XP for minor tweaks and sit back and watch the money roll in since people still continue to buy it. I really feel their primary customer doesn't really want anything better than XP anyways. Perhaps raise the price of XP or require yearly subscriptions to use the operating system. They have a very loyal fanboy user base that is higher than 90%.

Don't laugh, but this is one of MS's plans for the future to insure a steady stream of income. With their dominance of the market, there really is nowhere to go but down and that is rightfully scary to them.

Remember, when XP came out they were counting on a flood of cash from corporations upgrading. It didn't happen since 98 - or even 95 - was working fine (ugh!) for them. They had to then persuade people to upgrade from 95 by dropping support for it.

Subscription software is in their plans and don't you doubt it for a minute. It is already in with that A1 subscription announcement.

maybe MS wants to avoid the battle with Leopard, they want to fight with 10.6 instead.

The drop support has always been on the list. besides what is the point of spending money supporting software for an OS that is not used much as all.

Besides they support there OS's a lot longer than apple which seems to drop all major support right after a new one comes out. windows 2000 had major support though summer 2005 (when XP major support was oringally going to end) Lepord release on Day X. Major support for tiger will be dropped on the same day.

I don't believe it's 60% to be rewritten. Perhaps 60% to be reviewed and checked over?

No, they're still supporting Panther. They may not add new features to it but there are still 10.3.9 security updates where appropriate. Panther will probably continue to be updated until Leopard comes out at which point Tiger will move to security update only changes.

It does make you wonder what those guys at Microsoft are doing, how many releases has apple had in the time between XP and vista? Granted there not huge updates like XP to vista is meant to be (well which is kinda has to be because it's so old). It really amazes why people put up with Microsoft when they take forever to support new stuff. Like bluetooth I don't think XP even supports it properly, I remember last summer I think it was when I wanted to install a bluetooth adaptor to my PC that was a whole lot of fun having to download patches because there was some sort of security bug. Or IE standards is fun, holding back so much web development because they won;t add more support.

On another note I noticed yesterday that the name of the people who provide the coffee at Uni are called Vista, I smell a law suit!

As I said they drop all MAJOR support for it. secuirity only does not fall on major support They dont go activily looking to fix things and bug fixes it more if they discover something in Tiger that happen to be easily port back to panther they do it.

Windows 2000 still get secuirty updates but not so many bug fixes or adding new stuff. It more if they find something in XP that happens to effect windows 2000 they fix it. That is minor support.

Vista has been under development since before the release of XP. That means, since at least 2001 Vista has been on the drawing board. What I don't understand, is why didn't MS start from complete scratch? They could have built a brand new system as stable, etc as OSX (perhaps not as stable due to no unix underpinnings). Instead, it seams to be that they've just added junk onto XP making it cpu hungry, etc.

A very very interesting question: What improvements are there in Vista, which are worth the purchase?

While they are at it, they should also so the same for XP. I heard Bill Gates is very paranoid with the tech markets (which would be one of the reasons where he is now in the tech market) and he is always on the look-out for any potential threats to MS's domination. I am not surprised with this news about re-organization with Windows' division as MS's management would be at great unease with its Vista development.

"Microsoft said that Vista is "feature complete," which means that the code writing process is basically over. "The next phase of development focuses on security, testing and fit/finish - not writing new code," the spokesperson added.
The company also reiterated its prior shipping targets -- to business in November, and consumers in January 2007."

Here is a quote from M$ according to betanews.com.....

.....I think that I smell a coverup... ;) :)

Oh I don't know if it's a cover-up.

I really do think they need to start from scratch though. I suppose Apple was lucky with the foundation that NextStep had created, but it amazes me to this very minute how Microsoft who should be in a position to kill off anything Apple has instantaneously constantly dissapoints in terms of actually getting a vaiable product out there.

I know they have to support for a large base of consumers, but surely if the code was absolutly solid to begin with, they wouldn't have this trouble.

It is shocking that after 12 months XP is almost unusable without a format and install, and yet here I am typing on a Powermac (2004) that has not once been updated since I purchased (it works, don't want to change) and yet it runs as well as the day I got the thing!

Ha. The 60% story came from the same place that spread the latest iPhone fairy tale.

Still, Vista is looking more and more like Microsoft Copland.

I truly feel bad for all the people out there sitting in frustration with there computer thinking they have no other option... They really have loads more to come there way. :(
