Word and the other office apps for Office 365 are now available on the App Store. If you are comfortable with the Office 365 subscription price, you can install only Word.

I need to look again to see if there is a way to only pay for Word without the other programs.

The only way you can use the versions of the apps available on the App Store is to subscribe to Office 365, which gets you access to all the apps.

Exactly. Back in the days you used to be able to purchase Word and Outlook separately. Back in the days Microsoft also sold separate licenses for Mac and Windows users.

But, the times they are a-changin' and neither of those statements holds any truth anymore. While it is certainly possible to install nothing but Word on your Mac or Windows PC you will have to purchase the entire Office suite in order to do so. Office 365, Microsoft's Office subscription plan, has always been multi-platform and starting with Office 2019 so is the perpetual license. With Office 2016 you still needed to make a decision at the time of purchase, now you can use it on both platforms.

@Apple_Glen_UK I realize you are interested in the perpetual license of Office 2019, and I understand an support that. I'm not a big fan of subscription models either, however with Microsoft Office I always encourage people to do the math for themselves. Because Office 365 offers a whole lot for not a lot of money, and whether or not you end up saving money with the perpetual license or the subscription model depends mainly on how long you intend to use the software before you either have to or want to upgrade. Generally speaking Mac versions tend to stop working much sooner than Windows versions because Apple is known to not give a hoot about backwards compatibility and regularly declares APIs and features to be deprecated and removes them from their operating systems. On the other hand, backwards compatibility is at the very core of Microsoft's foundation, and they will jump through hoops to make sure you will still be able to run you 20 year old 32-bit software on even the most modern 16-core 64-bit machine. My wife, for example, still uses my old Office 2007 license on her brand-spanking-new Windows 10 laptop because that's what she's familiar with. You should be able to easily get five years on a Mac without any problems whatsoever, and then maybe another three years depending on Apple's ferocity. In return, you might be able to get five years of Office 365 for the price of a single perpetual Office 2019 license and enjoy continuous updates, new features, free Skype minutes, and 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage at the same time.

I agree with @mj_. Additionally to what he stated, the O365 versions of Word, Excel, and Powerpoint are user customizable with regard to the Ribbon and Menus whereas the stand alone versions are not. As stated above, the Mac App Store now has the O365 apps for download and purchase. That might be the best place to purchase them from.
