Apple do exactly the same thing - talking about all the 'improvements' from one OS to the next.

Oh - and those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones regarding product names. I don't think I've seen as much derision for the name of a product re: iPad since the Wii.

But apple never condone their own previous os. I haven't seen one. Microsoft ads shows that whatever you were using were a beta version vs current. And they are right. I think ms is a so mismanaged company that their r&d budget doesn't produce any quality product. Which other company can afford a product like xbox which lost 6billion per year after year and 50% failure rate to boot. Ofcourse there are vaporwares like courier.

They had 3+ yrs to copy iPhone and their windows phone 7 doesn't have copy/paste, multitasking.

You conveniently forgot to mention that the PS3 is also losing features on its way. They just dropped the Linux support a few days ago - and for many people that was the -only- reason to buy a PS3.

Um... call me strange, but I'd quite honestly buy a PS3 to play games.

I know, I think I'm going mad.

Red herring- Sony is taking out these features in software, because they're dumb. I was only discussing the engineering of the hardware.

Nor do microsoft. They use words like 'safer' or 'more stable' or 'faster'. They don't say 'the old one was unsafe' or 'the old one was unstable'

Exactly the same lexicon as Apple when it comes to OS upgrades.

You're calling the Linux option for the PS3 dumb??? Oh wait it is.

I bought my PS3 to play games and watch Blu-Ray movies. I want to use Linux, I'll fire up my laptop.

No, I'm calling that decision on Sony's part dumb. :p

Oh, I misunderstood you post.

Still, I stand by my post - the PS3 is a great game console. The percentage of owners that want to run an other OS on the PS3 must be incredibly small.

but I digress...

Winni, your trolling is off today....

Wow.... just.....wow. Are you guys in a club?

Winni is right though, in terms of the original statement. To view MS as a failure is just petty and blindly following some sort of dogma that has been fed to the more unenlightened parts of the masses, because it's 'the thing to hate the big players' rather then viewing them from a completely indifferent technological view point.

If the last roll of Windows had been such a massive failure, people would have fled ship. Instead, they stayed put. It says a lot that people would rather stay on older software (see XP) rather then change to a new bright, shiny Mac, that supposedly is the greatest operating system...finely tuned (a line that always gives me a hearty laugh). Everyone harps on about the loyalty for Apple products but that is still a pretty impressive feat.

As for the line that Win7 only sucks a bit less.... please.
For the corporate world, Win7 still blows away pretty much anything else offered, and that pains me to say because I'm an avid power Linux user. In terms of out of the box compatibility, a Windows box is still the easiest to set up and install. I'm not even a fan of IIS, but you have to admire how them have built it to be an incredibly large part of the net. Whats more notable, is that with the amount of free open ware servers/setups, people will still pay a premium price for IIS.

Finially, you say MS is the laughing stock of the technological world? Where were you in the mid-nineties? Swings and roundabouts.

I dont care who makes what. I dont care what company it comes from. I dont care who designed it. All I care about is the end result. If using what ever device will make me more satisfied. I have a mac for editing, a windows for work, a PS for music/gaming, a Kawasaki for getting to work, chrome for browsing, a nexus one for contact etc etc. I've picked these devices on their individual merits after reviewing and researching them, not because of the company that produces them.

If the last roll of Windows had been such a massive failure, people would have fled ship. Instead, they stayed put.

Except all the Platinum customers went to Apple. The most lucrative, brand-building, well-heeled segment bought the best their money could buy: Macs. (There's a $1000 entry-fee, let's not forget.) And Apple ended up selling more Macs quarter-for-quarter, setting new records in succession, in a recession! MS lost the Premium end of the market and gained a whole new segment of low-end buyers with Winblows running on netbooks, because MS decided it was time to sell on price and went for the cheap stuff and the market segment to match. Awesome. The bottom of the retail pyramid is always the widest, and MS just broke through to the basement.

The problem isn't that Microsoft lost any money. Making money from their universal licensing racket is no problem. They're awfully successful with that. Ethan Allen might sell the most beautiful and desirable patio furniture, but Wal Mart will always sell more plastic lawn chairs. But which one would YOU prefer?

No, MS lost something far, far more important: the image and branding war. Microsoft Corporation is now Ballmer's Bargain Basement. "Step right up and get yer netbook and we'll throw in another one for free!"

This is what has Microsoft acting so defensive: Windows still has overwhelming unit share, but it is now almost entirely at the low end of the market.

As for tech goodies *outside* of Windows, they're about one small step above the desirability and excitement of a Chinese motorcycle.

You cant blame a business for putting market survival above some idealized notion that it is inherently better then its rival.

Microsoft won the clone wars, and you have to remember, Apple readily engaged in that battle. A few different choices, and it could very easily have been Apple in every persons home. Apple were pretty much forced into the premium market, as it was the only market left where there was any room for growth.

You make cheap sound like such a bad thing. Lets remember, you can buy a full version of SL for under $30 (USD, as I am in AUD, so thats a vague memory collection) yet they charge this 'premium tax' on hardware that you can pick up for what? $300? $400? Geez, have you seen how much they charge on a new unit for RAM? You swear it came from the Moon.

And the other argument? People praised Apple for the low selling point of the iPad, so is it now the new corner stone of your pyramid? Perhaps they see a market opening and want to very quickly fill it? Just like a certain other company back a while ago in the personal computing market....

Oh boy! here we go! This will be fun!

Sure. That must then explain why Windows 7 is selling better than sliced bread. Just in case you fanboys need a reality flash: More people have been using the Windows 7 Beta than there are people who actually use a Mac. That's pretty impressive for "a failure of a company". More than half of all the servers on the Internet run Windows Server, and the rest does not run OS X, they run Unix or a flavor of Linux. Again, an impressive amount for "a failure of a company."

One, I am not a fanboy, I accept Apple's cons and do look down on the idiotic stuff they do (like limit hardware or cripple the hardware). Two, Windows 7 sales are obviously going to be bigger because of you said, its install base. Third, people who were on XP were dying for an upgrade while people on Vista were dying to wake up from a nightmare. Think Windows ME to XP.

Windows Server? You serious? Oh wow, think again.

And not to forget that there still is one billion PCs out there running Microsoft Windows, while there is only a fistful of Macs in comparison - and most of those current Macs ALSO have a copy of Windows installed on them in one way or another.

Microsoft OWNS the world wide corporate market on the desktop and even most parts of the data centers.

Google might disagree with you in terms of servers/data centers. Macs are a fistful because they carry a nice premium which not everyone can pay.

You must be living in a different reality if you call that "a failure of a company".

You can bet your pension that Microsoft will still be around and prosper when the world will have forgotten Apple. Steve Jobs won't be around forever, and without him Apple is just an empty shell.

I never said I had stock in Apple, quite contrary, I specifically stated my stock is in Intel's rival. Now if you think Intel rivals Microsoft, then you need a reality check. Oh by the way, thanks to my move, I earned 9x the value on the money I put in AMD. How? Well, back in June '09 AMD stock was at $1.08/share, and now you can sell them for $9.47/share.... nice change isn't it?

Now I catalogue Microsoft as a huge failure because:
a. They are now a "me too!" company (X-Box, Zune, Mac OS X features appearing with different names in Windows 7)
b. Their R&D failed to produce the tablet. They had the know how, they made a specific OS for it. They just couldn't bring the apps to play nice. Even their own executives didn't agree. Making the PC tablet a huge flop.
c. Their OS and Office programs are bloated beyond anything seen today. Seriously, I need 1GB of RAM for Windows 7 and it will run barely fine? Where as OS X is happy in 512MB?
d. Internet Explorer is the laughing stock of the browser world. Google makes sure of poking more fun at it by releasing a WebKit based engine for it, seeing as Microsoft fails to do it right. (11/100 in Acid 3 Test, later barely surpassing 50/100 when everyone else is at 93/100+?)
e. Their most successful division is the one suffering budget cuts in R&D. Seriously, wtf? When you have a successful division, you don't cut it back! You give it more money and take it away from failed projects/divisions who are not up to the job.
f. Their own employees acknowledge the superior technology and feats from their rival (See MS employees with iPhones and revelations of wanting to own a Mac)
g. Trying to be hip. Seriously, no. They are not, stick to the ties and suits

... I can go on and on. Yes, I also know Apple's cons like stated before. However, Apple leads the tech world. They don't fall behind and start being "me-too".

Also, did I forget to mention I don't care how Apple deals with out Jobs?
