I've always done the migration. Takes a moment. Then re-downloads your apps. Doesn't take all that long really. You'll have to sign in to everything again.

is there an option of what you want to migrate over or will it just migrate everything?

So Basically there is no difference between doing the phone to phone migration versus an encrypted iTunes restore?

Hello

Opinions needed. Which is a better method to setup your new iphone 11? Using the built in migration tool to copy over all your data or restoring from an itunes backup. Advantages/ disadvantages? Is using the migration tool the same as setting up as new and manually installing all your stuff?
I have always used the itunes restore method.

Thanks in advance!

Wait! What migration tool? I always just got the option to restore from iCloud or restore from iTunes.

It's new starting with 12.4. Unless you've bought a new phone recently, you won't have seen this. :) There are some good pages on the web that describe how you invoke this during the new phone setup process.

I haven't been able to figure out whether there's a difference, or how much. Same for the direct wifi transfer vs. the wired transfer. I'd love to see a comparison of (1) iCloud restore, (2) iTunes encrypted restore, (3) direct wifi migration and (4) wired migration. But some of that's going to depend on the local wifi speed/bandwidth usage, so in real life results would probably differ anyway, especially in an Apple store on launch day. ;)

As much as I dislike iTunes, I've been using it to restore from an encrypted backup for a longtime and it does transfer over everything.
I'd certainly like to know more about what exactly is transferred with a direct WiFi migration.

Will migration still work if your old phone is on 13.1 beta? I know restore from backup won't.

Gotcha! I'm really not interested in the migration tool since the "old" way always worked for me. I am assuming you can still set phone up as new and then load an icloud backup - right?

My understanding is that Google Authenticator is coded to the device, so it will never copy over to a new device whichever method one uses. In preparation, and after reading some comments in the UK iPhone 11 thread, I've already migrated all my 2FA things to the Authy app and it's working well. It can back up everything and on the new phone you log in to the app and it retrieves the backup. I've only had it a couple of days and am still confused about what happens if you change phone numbers, as it seems tied to that. Maybe someone else knows.

Someone else above asked about eSIMs ... same. They're specific to the device so you'll need to get another one.

I have an app on my iPhone XR that I want to copy over to my iPhone 11, but it's no longer available on the app store. What are my options?

Unfortunately, iTunes no longer saves the apps to your computer, so restoring from iTunes won't work. You may not be able to get that app on your new phone

I got really lucky, because I had two apps on my iPhone that are no longer available on the Apple App Store, but one of them copied over correctly.

My Mom has the same app that ported over correctly for me, and it worked for her too.

BTW, for those who might try and tell me that just because the app is no longer available in the store, doesn't mean it's not still available to download in my purchase history, it's not.

I don't know why the one app worked and the other didn't, but I didn't care as the one that didn't was one that I haven't used in years, and is currently being re-tooled and will have another iOS app soon should I decide I want it again.
