ITS MILKY WAY TIME!!!

I went to my usual dark sky location to test the iPhone 14 pro max in night mode. I must say the new larger sensor is 4x better than the 13 pro max. The Milky Way looks way more realistic and like a DSLR image……finally! Crazy to see these at ISO 12,500 and 10,000… wow. The max ISO of the new sensor is 12,768! Wow. But the images are clean at that ISO. I’m impressed. My iPhone was tracked on my skywatcher Star Adventurer during the 30” exposure to keep the stars pinpoint.

ProRAW and edited in Lightroom mobile.

For those of us with just the phones clarification. What is a skywatcher star adventurer? I am assuming something on telescope that tracks the same point but you can attach phone to it? 30” means second exposure? Not familiar with use of the ” symbol with time usually degrees minute seconds longitude’s and such. If we have a stand to hold phone still I assume too much movement of star field to do this without setup like yours I have the free lighroom and few other image and graphics. Programs but no monthly subscription version so not sure how much improvements I can do but wow beautiful shot
That is a simple battery powered tracking device that will mount on nearly any tripod, but a sturdy tripod is recommended. you don’t necessarily need it for the iPhone because the iPhone only will take a 30 second exposure. It will come in handy if you plan on taking multiple 30 second exposures so you can track the sky and stack all of the images to come out with a much cleaner photo. Here is a link to Amazon for that device and you can also go to the Skywatcher website and read up on it further.

If I understood correctly, the exposure wa 30 seconds. How/what compensated for the Earth's rotation, how is it the stars are not blurred? Sorry if I missed something.

Yeah I was using my Skywatcher Star Adventurer tracking head to compensate for the rotation of earth. 30 seconds, doesn’t seem like it would cause Star Trails, but it does the pain pending on the lens focal length. I bought it on Amazon.

I should be going on a cruise in a couple months looking forward to those dark skies to take some nice photos!!
I went on a cruise to Cozumel, and I was thinking the same thing, out in the middle of the ocean and dark skies. However, I was highly disappointed, because I couldn’t see any stars, hardly at all because of the glare of the lights from the ship. only the brightest stars were visible. There was also a lot of moisture in the air kind of like fog that blocked my view as well so hopefully you’ll have better luck than I did.

Omg Beautiful photos did you use proraw and what are your settings I would like to try this
Yes I did. ProRAW with iPhone on a tracker or tripod to hold it steady. Set the maximum exposure time of night mode to 30” and start taking photos. The iPhone will focus to infinity on its own, you shouldn’t have to touch to focus. Then edit when ready.

Incredible photo. I don't comment here often. Rarely, if I have something valid to say. These photos are amazing! Looking forward to seeing you back here again! Thank you for sharing!

Thanks Adam… honestly I thought this thread would be long gone by now. But since I took these with the new iPhone, it has hung around. I’ll have more soon I hope

I can’t speak for you all, but I certainly take the capabilities of these “phones” for granted.

This is seriously impressive!
Impressive indeed. Now Apple needs to give more control to the app developers so we can explore astrophotography much further. Sure dedicated DSLR cameras are much better, but it is fun pushing the iPhone to see what it can do.

The photo cut and past action is really cool.! Anyway, here’s a photo of my set up. taking mine that this is not necessary to be used but I just use it to keep from getting star trails over 30 seconds of exposure time. otherwise, just a standard tripod will work just fine, he’ll just have a photo with a good Milky Way with some elongated stars when zoomed in at 100%. this is the Skywatcher star adventure. The cell phone bracket I purchased on Amazon also and here is the link for that. It does an OK job I just wish it held the phone a little bit better but it’s made very well.

There are other options. Also, just read the reviews before you get one to see what’s best for you.
