There's an extra conductor in the 3.5mm minijack. My 30 gig iPod does this, and I use a video cable that came with my Sony camcorder (also with an extra conductor) to output to the 3 RCA connectors for stereo audio and composite video.

Looks like this:

As for the complaints about how blocky and dim this projector would look at 50", given the low resolution and the 9 lumen brightness, the obvious answer is: don't project at 50"! This is clearly designed for smaller projections, perhaps 12-24", for example David Pogue mentions using it on an airplane tray table and projecting onto the seat in front of him.

Exactly. A dock would only be required for iPhone and touch users, because the iPhone uses that extra conductor for the microphone.

Why isn't it wireless? Is it because of the drain on the iPhone battery, do you think? I'd buy one if it was wireless.

If you meant, why don't they transmit the screen over WiFi, it's 1) impossible to do using the official Apple SDK, and 2) yep it would drain the battery in an hour.

If you meant, why didn't they break it into two pieces: a dongle transmitter and a separate projector box, then yeah the battery would be a limiting factor. But that would allow them to build one projector and a bunch of phone-specific dongles. Interesting idea.

cool

Definitly looks like a sweet product. I'm sure it will be on Amazon and ebay for us in the USA. Everything else is!

I played with one of these built into a cell phone ... also have seen the TI pico DLP chip product line in hand ... very cool stuff.

although, dont expect all the lumens in the world out of these small projectors.

David said it was cool ? Humn.
"60-inch 480x320 video image" Err. That's ultra LOW REZ folks. It would be OK for a 20" projection of PowerPoint slides at a meeting of say 10 people though.

I know, the picture in the article doesn't make any sense. Thats why I mentioned that you would need a "apple universal dock" in my reply above. Does anyone have an idea of how the picture above would make sense??

Just like the iPod photo AV cable makes sense, the 'audio' jack on your iPod Photo also supports video out...

But a dock connector would make more sense

Too bad that Microvision has come up with something smaller and longer lasting codenamed "Show." Instead of LED's and DLP it uses significantly brighter lasers. The resolution is also higher at 848x480. Another bonus, the image is always in focus, no manual adjustment needed. The stand alone box lasts 2.5 hours on battery, easily long enough for most movies.

Microvision is also in talks with companies to get it built into gadgets.

Oh yeah- that's the sweet spot...

Can you imagine what 13 year old kids will do with this? Wow...

I just got my AAXA P1 pico projector, I must say I'm fairly impressed with its capabilities in such a small package. In my room (curtains open) I get fairly good 30" video and pictures. At night I can get pictures WAY bigger than my 52" LCD TV (although it is not as bright as my TV obviously).

It hooks up to my Iphone no problem. I ordered an apple DVI adapter to connect it to my G4. I hope the resolution 640x480 won't be an issue...

Sadly it wont be built into the next iPhone or Macbook because Apple doesn't believe in giving us what we want :p

Something like this, but more powerful with higher lumens and built into a Mac Tablet would be insanely awesome.

I think the main issue is battery consumption - the battery consumption required is reasonably high and we all know Apple never quite got their battery technology down ;)

Problem with that is you would have to aim your laptop to get a good picture. Why not just get a pico projector, it's not much bulkier than the Iphone...
