What about a notchless iPhone with a Touch ID on the back makes you feel it would be a horrible design.

The notch doesn’t bother me one way or the other if it existed or not. I think the reason I would not be interested with touch ID on the back the iPhone, smart phones have a larger design today and I feel reaching with your finger is cumbersome and awkward. At least that’s been my experience testing out other phones with the fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone. I know it works for some and they don’t mind the fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone, but Apple entirely chose a new biometric form of security with Face ID.

Also the biggest issue is trying to touch something without seeing where the hell the thing is. Annoying as hell.

I feel the same way when I pull out my x and find out the notch is on the bottom then in the dark it ends up not working and I have to manually input my unlock code. Lol

I am with ya, definitely not 100% there yet. I am happy with my X, but Face ID improvements are at the top of my list. Hopefully they come with the iPad.

Hmmm since people really don’t have an issue with the notch, it’s invisible, how about just put another one at the bottom to make Face ID even easier to use?

Hi everyone, this is my first post on this forum and I am still learning the interface. Wasn’t sure where to post. I am having a very difficult time setting up my Face ID. I have owned my iPhone X for just over 1 month and my Face ID seems to have quit working. Animojis do not work, now the unlock won’t work either. I have reset the ID itself and all settings on my phone. When I try to create a new Face ID it shows the frame, blurs in and out and tells me to either raise or lower the iPhone. This goes on for minutes until I give up. Any suggestions or other threads that may help?

Everything you’re saying, does not sound normal with the iPhone X you are using, sounds like it’s an issue with the camera with the Animoji‘s and registering Face ID. I would make a genius appointment to have Apple look at your phone, as it sounds hardware related.

This is going to sound silly but have you tried wiping the camera off? Have you put a screen protector on it that might be blocking the camera. I made both of those rookie mistakes when I first got mine.

Face ID gives freedom. Can open with any hand and it’s so easy to use during the winter. No gloves to take off etc. I like scan ID to but the change is refreshing.

It’s time to let Touch ID go. Face ID is a much better unlock method. I’ve been using it for months now-it’s awesome, really.

They’re not going to bring it back anymore than they are the headphone jack.
An unlock method, sure, maybe. I have found it more inconvenient for several other things.

It’s definitely a trade-off either way right now.

I have had the iPhone X since release and I have to admit I am a bit disenchanted with the FaceID. It works "well" but it is far from perfect. I feel like there is a set focal length range that FaceID works and it is too short, and the requirement to look at the phone is understandable but it is also disturbs the continuity of transactions with Apple Pay. I do think they could have possibly made an alternative Touch ID solution. 2 small IR cameras that have the resolution to calculate the high and low points on a fingerprint at VERY close range. the 2 cameras could triangulate for depth and could be mounted extremely close together to make it work at "near glass depth" it could possibly be in the rim edge near the lightning connector.

I know I am not going to get this... and I know I must learn to love FaceID, like I had to learn to love USB-C. Time will likely cure my disenchantment... but for now it is still present.

At least you can admit it.

Fanboys cannot.

Most likely big improvement coming to
Face ID in the next iPhone
For those that remember when the 5S came out with Touch ID there were problems. But the iPhone 6 took care of everything

It’s not really relevant compare touch ID with Face ID, because they’re two separate forms a biometric security with various intricacies. I don’t think Face ID is drastically going to change as you’re indicating for the 2018 iPhone. Perhaps maybe with software improvements, but I think hardware will typically remain the same.

Authorizing payments is one of the areas the FaceID workflow requires more steps and takes longer to do than TouchID.

Another one that comes to mind for me are MFA apps. Particularly Microsoft’s Authenticator (as it’s the only one I use and cant speak for others). With TouchID, if I get a request for authentication I just have to place my thumb on the sensor and it’s good to go. I often did this before the request actually hit the app so it would just instantly authenticate.

With FaceID, when the request comes in I have to choose to Approve or Deny it, then it does the FaceID scan. This is an extra bit of interaction that gets me a couple of times a day.

I know TouchID is dead. I’m not expecting it to come back to phones and I’m sure I’m time I’ll adjust workflows and won’t even think about it. Face ID is better and more secure for some things. It’s just not an absolute rule. It may be for all of your usage and, if that’s the case, then cool.

Chips parts firmware can be updated at any time and provide better yields but not necessarily be 2.0

Bought mine two weeks ago did the rotate face while setting up FID and its only gotten better

Ah, I see what you mean then. My usage doesn’t require it so often as yours. If it did, I might feel the same way. Thanks for a thoughtful answer-I was genuinely curious. I’d imagine the second generation of FaceID will make for less delay and wider angle of recognition. It’ll definitely be interesting to see if any changes are made this year.

Rotate face-how does that work?
