Personally, I like the softer volume of the tones. I really hate being in a restaurant, or other public place hearing everyone else's ringtones at full blast.

Do the ringtones and notification tones change after the iOS 17 install? If they do change, is it true that there's no way to change it back to the iOS 16 defaults?

Luckily, the personalised ringtones on my 14PM are still there after the IOS 17 install. However, as others have previously stated, the new default alert tone is disappointingly quiet. Let's hope a 17.01 upgrade will bring a solution. Who knows, one day, maybe Apple will let us choose are own default alert tone - how radical would that be, in the knowledge that Android has let you do this for ever and a day! Sheesh!

Custom notification tones are missing from settings in iOS 17. Your custom tones are still displayed for ringtones and are still assigned for your notifications but do not show when you go into text tones etc. if you change the tone you lose the assigned custom tone and can only select from the default tones. Bit of a bummer. Bug reported.

You’re not the only one. I’ve a few custom tones on my iPhone that I can no longer select with iOS 17. Hope it’s just a bug.

It looks like Apple has changed the file format used for notification sounds.

On iOS 16 and older, both ringtones and notification tones were .m4r files, essentially AAC files with a different file extension.

On iOS 17, ringtones are still .m4r files, but all the notification tones are .caf files. For some reason the new ones all have 'EncoreInfinitum' in the filename as well.

I wonder if this change has something to do with custom tones not showing up any more.

Interesting… so Apple has purposely segregated these. WOW!

My Mail app is no longer giving me sound or vibrating notifications after upgrading to 17. I'm pretty sure all my settings are good.

I just updated to 17.0.1 and still no notifications.

Probably because Ding is no longer in the notifications list. Until they fix all of this, select a tone from the available list.

Ding is still in my list of notification sounds. It still makes the sound when I click on it. But to test this out, I've selected a new tone and not from the classic list. But..... My text message tone is from the classic list and that's still working.

I'll report back when I get another email.

Did anybody notice that the Apple Watch sounds are also lower in volume?

When my rings closed earlier it definitely sounded quieter.

I didn't even notice the missing Mail sound...and I actually don't miss it lol. I don't have push or fetch enabled on any of my mail accounts, so it only ever dings and vibrates when I'm in the Mail app anyway...actively checking my email... I think I'll just turn that off now in anticipation of it eventually being fixed.

Yeah and those of us wearing Apple Watch don’t much notice it either. However when I listening on my AirPods Pro I do want those notification tones I have downloaded.

Hahahaha, i just noticed the same and realized that i don’t hear my mail notifications for god knows how long. I also don’t use push/fetch. Well, i gave up hope a long time ago so if they fix it, fine, if not, i’m already used to not having it. 😂

Bit annoyed as I use ‘he’s a pirate’ as my tone (full 45 sec clip) for certain notifications. They still work on my phone but not my iPad as I had messed about with settings and lost them. I like it on my iPad as it’s loud AF and annoys my wife. 😂

Makes you wonder why many of the reported bugs haven't been discovered during the Beta period. I guess many of the people downloading Beta software are just using it as is with little interest in testing out stuff and reporting such issues.
this wasn't an issue in the betas. custom tones always worked until RC.

Yep, Apple seems to have thought something like changing how tones work was straightforward and not worth beta testing.
Let’s hope they fix this soon. You would think after all these many iOS updates having custom tones would have been discussed if they meant to change things.

I would also note that tones are too quiet to hear in an environment where anything is causing noise.

And while all refreshed and more modern, they are far more bland than the ringtones. Lower octaves, flatter notes, and very little tonal differences to differentiate between one type of action and another.

I’m running into “all the small things” adding up to a giant annoyance and one iOS update I’m regretting. iOS 13 might have been bug riddled but so many choices in iOS 17 just scream, “what were you thinking”?
